my power steering started making a noise and the steering became difficult. upon checking my power steering fluid and adding some there was improvement, but i noticed i was leaking power steering fluid. i took the truck to a local mechanic and found out that the rust on the underneath of the truck was so significant and that a hole had actually rusted through causing the leakage of power steering fluid. i had to have the entire rack and pinion replaced. the mechanic notified me and actually showed me all of the rust concerns. there is significant rust on the frame and other hardware parts on the underneath of the truck. toyota notified me of 2011 that there were some concerns and request i go to the dealership to have a compound placed on the frame to prevent further rusting. i did complete this as requested, however the mechanic showed me that the compound looked like it was sporadically placed and that it basically did no good. the rust issue is significant. i contacted toyota once i knew the issue was rust related and after talking with a couple of people i spoke with someone at headquarters. he basically told me that he could not do anything for me unless toyota issued another frame recall. he said the company was considering it, but no issue has came out. i then stated that it sounds like toyota knows that there is an issue, but is not sure if they want to own up to it and address it. this was not denied by the representative i was speaking with. in addition to the frame rust, there are other hardware rust issue that are of safety concern. any line that carries fluid underneath the truck is in danger of rusting through. also, there is a steering mechanism with significant rust and if for some reason the bolts completely rust off then i lose control of all steering. thank you for listening to my concerns. *tr

while my daughter was taking a left hand turn into supermarket entrance, her steering locked up on her. she has been driving this car since middle of june 2014 when car was purchased for her. i have owned toyotas in the past, and have known them to be reliable vehicles. this incidence has happened multiple times since this time, and toyota apparently knows of the problem. they even recognize it as being some form of electronic powering steering issue, whos cost is upwards of 1400.00 to repair. i am completely dumbfounded by this (clearly a safety issue), that is suppose to cost me, the consumer another 1400.00 to repair. i have read of this issue in previous logs, news reports, and complaints. why has toyota or nhtsa not forced this issue. i believe now that this is unsafe for my daughter to drive, and do not have the funds to purchase another vehicle. if safety is not a concern here, i am not sure what merits that distinction. signed, a very upset parent and once loyal toyota customer

there is a loud clunking noise coming from the steering column. the road surfaces causes the steering wheel to jerk and creates a rattling clunk noise and low speeds. if the steering wheel shook side to side, the apparent noise is clicking. i suspect this is a faulty steering intermediate shaft. at highway speeds, the car tends to drift out of the lane. uneven road surfaces causes the wheel to jerk at city and highway speeds. wheel balancing and vehicle alignment were performed. the issue has not been fixed. replacing the intermediate shaft should be a recall as well as the replacement/reprogram of the eps module.

i have started having an intermittent power steering issue. as i am driving the steering wheel begins to shake and i receive an error message that there is an issue with the power steering system. then the error clears and says the problem is solved. this issue happens intermittent and sometimes lasts longer. i know in the past there was a recall on the power steering unit in the past. i believe the previous owner had the recall service done, but i do not understand that if the service was performed why my vehicle is having this issue with my prius.

while driving home from work on 01/24/2015 i felt and heard a noise coming from the rear of my vehicle and the vehicle started to swerve and i almost lost control of the vehicle. i came to a stop and checked the vehicle but didn't notice anything wrong. i got back into the vehicle and drove at a slower speed, when i got home i pulled into my garage and checked the under side and noticed that the frame was cracked where the control arm mounts. i looked on line for recalls and although there are a lot of complaints and there are recalls for the 2000 toyota tacoma which shares the same platform there are no recalls for frame rust on the toyota 4runner. in addition to the crack on the frame there is considerable rust on the entire frame and i think i'm lucky to be un hurt and alive. please help me and all the other toyota 4runner owners. thanks
