most important: we do not drive the car now. unable to get answers to possible solutions. called toyota they said they cannot assist if the problem is not happening when they get the car. this problem is intermittent at best. i asked if they had problems such as mine below and can give me some idea and they said they cannot assist me without having the problem occur while they have the car. we cannot drive the car for it may shut down on us. latest problem: the vehicles engine shut down while driving 30 mph. tried to restart the vehicle and everything comes on as if it was going to start up (meaning: the problem is not battery), but would not crank over, no noise, nothing. after playing with the fuses, and waiting a bit the car was able to crank over and start. a week before the latest (above): the car was in park and running, the engine shut down, tried starting the car and same scenario as above, we let the car rest overnight and the next morning it started up. (we didn't do anything to the car). years ago: the same thing as above except, i went to go use the car, it would not start, had noise and lights but no cranking of engine, nothing (same scenario as above). but, after letting time go by the car would start. (i changed the key to a backup key i had and it started up.) others have this problem as we have tried to find out what the problem is, we came across the same scenarios but no solution.

while driving or when parked, all dashboard gages (engine temp, speedometer, etc.) drop to 0. at the same time, the "brake" and the "abs" lights illuminate. the indicator for park/drive/reverse is no longer illuminated, and the outside temperature indicator flashes between "e" and the correct temperature. in addition, the a/c fails to cool, despite all lights/indicators on the console appearing normal (no flashing lights to indicate a malfunction.) all above issues will randomly occur - no obvious correlation to braking, acceleration, etc. at times, some of the gages will normalize, while others remain at "0." in addition, some gages will fluctuate sporadically, or "bounce" up/down - not indicating true engine temp or speed. the problems will all resolve at times, seemingly randomly, and then reoccur - just as randomly. i have found numerous videos on youtube which document this issue, and i have noted numerous complaints on this website describing the same problem. after several weeks (on 11/14/14), i took my car to the local dealership, describing the issues and suggesting the brake actuator had failed (as i had read from other owner complaints.) the local dealership stated that they had seen several other vehicles with similar issues, but was confused about the involvement of the a/c issue. (please note: i live in a city with a population of less than 250,000.) after several days of diagnostics, the local dealership contacted a toyota specialist in houston, tx, who confirmed that the brake actuator had failed. i paid $1932.23 for parts and labor (that's including a 10% discount) to have the issue repaired. my vehicle was with the dealership for 11 days before it was finally repaired. i am concerned that so many people seem to have had the same problem, and that a recall has not been issued for a condition affecting multiple safety features of the vehicle.

my 2010 prius has had an ongoing problem with the main headlamps blowing, becoming inoperative and effectively leaving me with diminished visibility. this has happened approximately every 3 months since march 2014. either one or both headlamps will blow. this is due to a known problem with this model and is covered under a toyota/nhtsa service bulletin (tsp-0204-12). in my case, i purchased the car used, from a toyota dealer with the toyota certified car warranty, but this failure of the wiring harness is apparently not covered. judging by the percentage of complaints in the safercar.gov database for this model, this is a common problem and my experience has been typical. in the most recent incident, it was raining heavily and i ended up driving 150 miles with a blown headlamp, unsafe for me and unsafe for those whom i shared the road with.

i purchased a new 12v battery at about 30k miles. at about 59k miles the 12v was discharging at random times. at first i thought it was because i was leaving lights on, but it began happening more frequently. i did some research and learned that when the key is in smart mode and it is within 10 feet of the car it can discharge the 12v. i turned off the smart key but the 12v discharged again a few more times until i could no longer get a charge when i jumped it. i had it towed to a local mechanic who installed a new 12v and 2 fuses ($500!!), but there were 4 or 5 warning lights that couldn't be reset so i drove it to the toyota dealer. for some reason the toyota service rep asked if i had all the recalls serviced. i was told i could not drive the car because it needed a new electronic converter unit ($5800!!!) and there was a real danger the car would die while i was driving. however, the mileage is only 62000! i called another shop that is hybrid certified and their expert said he sees the ecu going at 100,000 but not at low miles. all hybrid owners are aware of the potential risk of needing to replace the hybrid battery toward the end of the life of the vehicle, but that is nothing compared to the major expense and potential danger of the ecu failing. why was i not told about this? i wonder why toyota's first question was to ask if i had all the service recalls, is there a recall coming on the ecu?

at approximately 8:20 am on friday, january 16th, 2015, i was pulling into an empty parking spot in front of my apartment complex after dropping my 6 year-old at school. this was a routine as i do this every morning. however, as i was slowing the car down preparing to park (5-10 mph), the car suddenly accelerated (approximately 25-30 mph) and ran over the sidewalk, bushes and into the side of my apartment complex. despite my attempts to brake, the car would not stop. in the process i ran through the side of my apartment complex wall and front gate, nearly going right through my front door and living room where my 6 month old and wife were playing. i had to place the car in park and turn the car off. that stopped the car. i then turned the car back on and reversed. luckily no one was injured, but there was substantial damage done to the side of my apartment complex and my vehicle. should be noted, that despite the impact, no airbags were deployed. at the moment, my insurance company has me at fault. i have filed with toyota corporate and they are having a specialist investigate the vehicle. i do not feel safe in this car. and hope that this is investigated further. had i not turned off my car, i would have surely gone through my front door and into my living room, potentially hurting my 6 month old and wife.

one of the headlights (low beam) stopped working sometimes in 2013, then it came back. over the course of 2013-2014, the front right light went out and i had the light bulb replaced. then it died again. i replaced both bulbs based on the aftermarket recommendation but the lights are not bright enough. the front left parking light also died twice. something is screwy with the electrical for the lights

while driving the left headlight went out i turned off the lights and back on, the headlight came back on. since this first incident the right headlight done the same while driving. both headlights have turned off at the same time while driving. it seems like this is a wide spread issue with this year of prius. the dealership will currently only replace the bulbs at a cost to me of $1250.00. the bulbs don't seem to be the problem, considering they work most of the time. if you can turn the lights off and back on again and the light(s) return to working state, its seems to be an electrical controller board problem.

yesterday morning when starting my 2014 4runner the trac off light stayed illuminated along with the check engine light. i took the vehicle to the dealership and it was discovered that the vehicle was damaged by rodents (chewing, droppings). an electrical wire had been completely chewed through. i turned the damage into my insurance company but am out a days work, $50 deductible, $100 deposit for rental vehicle and $5.10 tax daily on the rental. i believe this is all due to the soy being added to the vehicle electrical wiring (and anything else that is soy based) literally ringing the dinner bell for vermin.

i purchased a certified used 2010 toyota prius from the east coastâ¿¿s number one certified used toyota dealer. i was presented with papers showing all the checks performed with a certified used toyota and that the vehicle i was purchasing had pass all the inspections. i test drove the vehicle during the day and did not use the headlights. once i was home (over 3 hours away) i used the headlights for the first time in the next few days. the driverâ¿¿s side lights were very dim. i took the low beam bulb out and notice a lot of corrosion on the bulb and moisture in the headlamp assembly. i let it dry out and replaced both the drivers and passenger side low beam light bulbs. over the summer i noticed a few time moisture would build up but would be gone within a few days. now during the winter the moisture has frozen inside the driver side headlamp assembly and impedes on the effectiveness of the headlamp. my visibility is reduced and has now become a safety issue. i have not owned the vehicle for a full year yet and even purchased the top of the line extended toyota warranty. my local dealer stated it was not covered under any warranty and that would cost around $500 to be replaced. toyota has a technical service bulletin on this issue and should repair at no cost to owners due to a safety hazard.

my 2007 prius has the hid (high intensity) headlights. sometimes both headlights go out at the same time and sometimes just the passenger side headlight goes out. i originally thought that the problem was the bulbs so i replaced both bulbs just a few weeks ago with new bulbs, but the problem is still occurring. sometimes when i turn the light switch off and then on again the headlights come on again. it seems to be a random occurrence but it is happening more and more frequently. this is a very dangerous situation especially when driving at night.

while in cruise control on an incline my rav4 accelerates out of control so i have to apply the brake to get it out of cruise control. i had this on 2 rav4s, both 2001, one was 4wd and the other 2wd. toyota tried to repeat the problem in the first vehicle by sending it home with a tech who drove to modesto. they could not repeat it...on my current car it does the same and toyotas best answer was not to use cruise control after he asked why i was using it anyways. i was worried about the ecus in these cars and before buying it, sent the private dealer to toyota to remedy this. now i find out they only flashed the ecu under the recall which they new didnt fix anything. now 2 years later i face the harsh shifting condition....all on me. im lucky not to hsve been hurt by either of these issues not addressed properly by toyota, and thank god my 9 year old wasnt with me when the car stopped shifting properly.

while driving the vehicle loses pedal response due to the throttle control motor shutting down and the check engine light coming on. the engine either shuts down completely or the becomes very jerky and cannot sustain an idle. incidents began to occur around 95,000 miles odo but stopped for several years after a mechanic worked on the vehicle and said the throttle position sensor was out of alignment. more recently the truck has again been experiencing the same problem as before: loss of pedal response, and in addition it now shuts the engine down and the gauges shoot up to the top of the charts and tick unresponsively until the key is removed from the ignition. this has occurred multiple times now in traffic and along the roadway where the truck becomes unresponsive and is difficult to drive safely off of the roadway.
