2001 saturn sl2 sedan timing chain failure. it is currently at an automotive repair shop, so i do not have the vin handy (but if you need it, contact me). they do not want to replace the timing chain because they say they have had experiences where they do this and it fails again in a few months. they say they do not want to look for another engine because it would have the same problem. i specifically bought the saturn because it had a timing chain instead of a timing belt (because i owned a fiat on which the timing belt broke and i never wanted to go through that again). yet, here i have the same problem with a timing chain. i have heard that there is a lubrication issue with the timing chain that causes it to fail. i hope this can be investigated. saturn made a big deal of their "300,000 miles club" and how robust and long-lasting their cars were, and now this. to make things worse, our family has two 2001 saturn sl2 sedans! *tr

oil found in coolant in my 1997 saturn sl in summer 2004 after minor front-end collision. in the 2-3 months prior to collision, i had to add coolant every 3-4 weeks, as coolant low warning light would come on. coolant had normal appearance prior to accident. car ran fine, temp gauge never went above normal. car had @ 78,000 miles when this began to happen. advised by mechanic friend that i had probably begun to develop a cracked head before accident, this was a common occurrence in saturns built in 90's. the collision possibly worsened condition. he advised that head would certainly need to be replaced, but car could potentially run for some time before overheating problems developed-stated i would have an expensive repair, and i could repair now or wait until i had to replace part. he advised careful watching of gauge and oil if i chose to wait. car ran fine for 6 full months after oil first found in coolant, with frequent oil "top-offs" and religious watching of temp gauge, which never wavered from normal in those 6 months. absolutely no noticeable effect on car's performance. in late november car finally overheated. the cracked head i knew i had 6 months ago is now being replaced. i am fortunate to have "friends in the business," so my repair will not be as expensive as the folks forced to go to the dealership. i am repairing this car because other than this incident, the only mechanical repairs needed have been a few minor replacement campaign program items (horn issue and steering issue) taken care of for free by the dealer and one minor oil leak fixed under warranty. *jb

in january, february and march of 2003 i experienced repeated stalling on the highway with my 1999 saturn. no one, including a saturn dealer, knew what was wrong. by trial and error, it seemed that if i kept the gas tank at least half full i could avoid the problem. it wasn't the best solution, but it seemed to work. but this past saturday, november 20, 2004, it stalled again on the highway. on sunday i drove it around town and it was fine. then today it stalled again in almost exactly the same spot as two days ago. the worst part is that it had almost a full tank of gas; this is the first time that the stalling occurred with that much gas in the tank. it never happens on the way home from work, only on the way there. the stalling occurs after i have driven approximately 20 miles at a speed of about 65 miles per hour. the car gives an indication that it's about to die by shuddering. so far i have been lucky that i am able to pull over to the side of the road. after turning off the car and waiting five minutes, i can start it up and continue my drive to work, about another 10 to 15 minutes away. if i wait less than five minutes, the car stalls again. i feel this is a serious safety issue because of what could happen if i was unable to pull off to the side of the highway. the saturn dealer i took it to in 2003 didn't seem to care. *jb
