noticed a strong gasoline odor emanating from the rear of the car. on further investigation, i discovered that there was fuel pooling underneath the drivers side back seat and that two electrical wires were submerged in the fuel collecting underneath the seat. the fuel originated from a crack near the top of the fuel sending unit. this is a potential fire hazard not to mention the significant health issues to all passengers including the nine year old that is transported in this vehicle. this is a known issue and should be thoroughly investigated. *tr

my car was supposed to have the initial recall completed in 2008. recently i noticed a strong gas smell coming from my car and has gotten worse. i removed the rear seat and access cover to the fuel pump and noticed a large puddle of gas accumulated/leaking around the fuel pump sender unit area. also the production date of the parts were 2004, so it is likely the dealer didn't do anything back in 2008. i now have to drive with a constant smell of gas in the interior of my car and can't park it in the garage due to risk of fire hazard. *js

in december 2011 i detected a strong fuel smell from inside the cabin of the car. the smell was so strong that i felt it was in my best interest to drive to the nearest european car service center, since the nearest mb service center is 45 minutes away. it was determined that the charcoal filters under the rear seat were leaking, causing fuel to pool. we called the mb service center and was told there was a recall on the charcoal filters but it was closed. i was incredulous that such a serious problem (any leaking fuel issue should be considered serious) was completely ignored by mb and i was on my own. i had no choice but to pay to have the filters replaced at my expense out of fear of my car exploding. now, july 2012, the charcoal filter valve is leaking and causing another gas odor. so i started researching this issue and was surprised to find a great number of other consumers facing the same issues as myself. everyone experiencing these issues after the recall was closed seems to be in the same boat, mb refusing to issue another recall and/or cover the cost of the repairs. i believe that mb should be responsible for correcting all issues related to leaking fuel for the continued safety of all mb owners. quite frankly, i'm scared to drive my car! *js

asr light came on, came up to a red light on a hill, stopped , light turned green and when i attempted to accelerate the car had almost no power and had a very hard time getting through the light. the car was taken to the repair shop where they were unable to diagnose the problem. the tester was unable to communicate with the control module. i finally found a repair shop that knew about this car having a known problem. when he showed me the wiring it had cracked broken missing insulation on the all the wires. he said that since the wiring was missing it's insulation it was shorting out. the e t a which caused the limp mode. *tr

2001 mercedes benz s600 - oil leak and car fire - that is a known problem with this car. does there have to be a death or injury before mercedes is held responsible for the problem. just because there are not as many of these cars on the road, is that the reason there has not been a recall? i was sitting in the car while parked, with the engine running, picking up my grandson from school. within minutes i noticed white smoke around the car. i thought it was exhaust from the car either in front or in back of me, as they were both waiting for children, motors idleing as mine was. suddenly, my car was completely engulfed in smoke and i could smell something and thought it was comming from my car and that i should get out and see for sure where it was comming from. at that moment, before i could exit the car, flames shot out of the driver side of the hood of my car. still sitting in the drivers seat, they shot up higher than i could see. i flew out of the car and ran far from it, as the gas tank was full and i feared an explosion. upon exiting the car, the flames continued to soar, about 13 to 15 feet into the air and flames were also shooting down, underneath the car and on to the pavement. people had immediatly called 911 and the fire department arrived within a few minutes and put out the flames. they then took a huge saw and cut the hood open, from one side to the other. the engine was a mass of molten metal. the car was totaled. if i had been on the freeway and all of the flamew had been swept back and under the car towards the gas tank or fuel lines, i may not have been so lucky. after my incident, i searched the internet and found numerous posts, pictures and videos of s600 car fires as a result of oil leaks!!! *tr

i came out to my garage one morning to find a my car wreaking of fuel. i decided to drive the car around for a few to see if it the pungent odor would go dissipate altogether. during this time, i took it to my mechanic to let him do a quick once-over before he left for the day. he stated that there was fuel leaking onto my exhaust. being that he didn't have the tools and whatnot to replace the sending unit, i had it towed to mercedes benz. i was not going to let my girlfriend drive the car to the dealership. no way, no how. skyland automotive(my local mecedes benz dealership) found a puddle of fuel under my back seat. they replaced the fuel sending unit partially under my third party warranty. i, however, had to pay roughly $500 out of pocket. i have heard of this issue happening on many w211 e class cars, it has happened to some more than once. i'm at 7x,xxx miles now and definitely don't want to have to go through this again. fuel leaking onto the ground is bad enough, but leaking onto my exhaust isn't to be tolerated. it's downright dangerous. car began smelling of raw fuel after being filled up. found that the fuel level sending unit was leaking fuel out of the top of the fuel tank. a puddle of fuel was visible on top of the sending unit and was leaking onto the ground. this posed a significant fire risk and the car was moved outside. i have contacted mbusa and they have offered no help, saying this isn't a known issue. after researching the issue i have found it is widespread and affects multiple models. we can no longer fill the fuel tank without having a puddle of fuel left under the car. *tr
