when braking, the car self-accelerates. there is no predicting when this will happen- sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. this has occurred approximately twenty times when i have started/stopped the car while parking and also once on a busy highway when i was unable to stop for a red light. when this happens, my foot is on the brake, but the car accelerates. the car has been to the ciocca hyundai dealer in quakertown, pa three times. they've kept it as long as three days. they tried to duplicate the problem and i was told it did not occur. they've told me that they've never heard of a problem like this. they checked out the car and told me that nothing is wrong. the problem has been reported to hyundai- regional case #6004610 and case #6342874. after filing there's nothing that can be done besides file the report with the regional representative. i've been fortunate that no one has been injured so far. my family members will not ride in the car with me. the car currently has 5,700 miles on it. it is a killer car- an accident waiting to happen.

electrical smell like melting plastic wiring: first incident as noted above; 2nd incident on 1/29/2013, mileage 9227-on vehicle start up (engine warm as it was after earlier driving) same hot, melting wire type smell coming through climate control dash vents; 3rd incident on 4/12/2013-mileage 12,353-hot burning smell through heater vents occurring on/after climbing steep hill for a mile or so; 4th incident-4/16/2013, mileage 12538, location of incident same as 3rd incident, same hill climb, same smell occurring during drive. reported to dealer. could not be duplicated during service appt. no further incidents of burning smell to current date: 01/13/2014. cruise control and transmission gear selection issues: first incident: around 1/20/2013; subsequent incidents periodically since then to current date of 01/14/2013: when on cruise control, speeds set at anywhere (40-60 mpg for these incidents), on coasting down or flat terrain transmission will shift from 6th (high) gear down to 3rd or 4th and hold that gear with engine rev ving accordingly, until i either manu-shift it back up to 6th, or, perhaps after 10 or more seconds it might shift into higher gear on its own. i have deliberately not disengaged cruise control during these incidents to continue to assess the condition. related to this is occasional excessive acceleration as car can drop (on cruise) to below set speed as in a dip in the road, and then applying speed to get back to set speed, but, it will accelerate aggressively to as much as 10 mph above set speed before cruise control mode 'back' off the acceleration action, making the car feel like it is 'taking off'. this can happen often on certain roads at same transition points from coasting downward into a dip in the road, then (cruise control) reapplying power to get the car backup to speed. rest will be sent in a second submission following this. *tr

see submission number 10559603 sent prior to this on 1/14/2014: this is a continuation of the explanation of the cruise control/transmission/power train issue experienced with the vehicle since new. the text from that submission continues to its end. "it would appear that the cruise control/power train computer program has some errors in it or needs updating to correct the problem of excessive acceleration when re-attaining a set speed from a coast down that causes the car to go below the set speed before the sensors detect and activate the acceleration required to bring the car back up to the set speed. then is 'shoots' the car forward at full power-like unintended acceleration might- and send it up to as much as 10 mph above the 'then set' speed i have desired. if there is a corner at the end of the rise, the car can feel out of control during this acceleration as it is at full power during the acceleration phase. the transmission also down shifts 2 or 3 gears during this process which aggravates the fierce acceleration feeling. these incidents have been reported both to the hyundai dealer and to hyundai. hyundai says, take it to our dealer; the dealer says they can find nothing wrong as no dash warning lights are ever showing and their electronic scanning brings up nothing of any kind of problem. this may or may not be exclusive to the sonata hybrid with cruise control and since many people do not use cruise control on winding rural roads, they may not/never experience the same sensation that can happen often to me. i can deal with it. nhtsa should keep this report on file in case other cruise control or acceleration issues with hyundai vehicles surface as my report is precisely defined as to what type of road condition it occurs on and what happens. thank you. *tr

on this date it was unusually cold weather for our state at a high of 7 degrees plus wind chill ("the polar vortex"). i was leaving for work and had let my car run for about 5 minutes before beginning to drive. i was not even a quarter of a mile away (actually only about a street over) from my home when i stopped at a red light. there was an suv in front of me. when the light turned green and the suv in front of me began to drift slightly forward, i did the same. when i went to put my foot on the gas pedal to drift forward at the pace of the suv in front of me, it abruptly accelerated. there was about 5 feet in between the suv and my car, but i was unable to stop fast enough and rear ended the suv in front of me. there was minor damage, however this was completely unavoidable and unnecessary. the following day, which was also a very cold day, i had just left my house for work and when i went into reverse it did the same exact abrupt acceleration. thankfully this time there were no cars around---in combination with my awareness of this possibly being an issue. *tr

i had just pulled into a small rural parking lot and parked facing a wood fence in the afternoon. i had my foot on the brake and put the car into park. the car suddenly lurched forward about ten feet, knocking over a wood fence post and incurring $3,000 damage to the car. i still had my foot on the brake, and slammed it instantly as the car lurched. fortunately, no person was walking along the sidewalk, and i had my seat belt in place. i insisted the car be towed to the nearest hyundai dealer rather than to a local repair shop, since i wanted to find the cause of this acceleration malfunction. the dealer said they found nothing wrong, other than the front end damage. i insisted that hyundai national send out an engineer to check the car. i have also found a report on the internet from kmov.com news in st. louis 2/28/13, that three local owners there experienced sudden unintended acceleration. the case detailed in the news report was exactly like my experience of sudden lurching acceleration from a parked position, but the hyundai engineer reported nothing was wrong. however, our experience documents an unintended acceleration problem unrelated to driver error. i have told hyundai that i will absolutely not continue to drive this car.

i had begun to accelerate from a red light. the car in front began to stop again. when i pressed on the brake pedal, it would not go down, was not stopping the car at all. the car continued to accelerate on its own and i hit a van. the airbag went off, but the engine revved up, and the car shot forward again, hitting the other vehicle again. i tried putting the car in neutral and park. nothing stopped it until i turned the vehicle off completely. i have the 'norm' seatbelt bruising, smashed my knee on the dash, and have whiplash as well. *tr

i bought my car in september 2013, it is certified pre-owned and came with the original 100,000 mile/10 year warranty, i purchased the extra electrical warranty. i was driving at about 40 mph and i noticed my transmission wasn't switching gears when i was accelerating and if i took my foot of off the brake the car wanted to stop, my brakes were locking up. there was smoke coming from the front drivers side tire and from the back passenger side tire and a loud noise. i pulled over, shut off the car and waited about 10-15 minutes until the smoking stopped and i turned the car on and began to drive home. i was only about 3 minutes from my home at that time. the transmission was continuing to demonstrate problems and the brakes to make a low rumbling noise. i called hyundai roadside assistance right away to take my car to the dealership to be evaluated and fixed. i called at 3pm and they did not pick up my car until 9:30 pm. the next day they called me and told me my car was driving fine and they were going to check several other components of the car to confirm everything was in working order. a few hours later i called to get a status update on my vehicle and i was told that they discovered something wrong, they had conducted a test drive for the second time and discovered all of the problems i was initially reporting about the car. the service manager then told me he was not sure of the cause and that he would have to check several other things and i would need a rental car because he did not know how long the repair would take. i got the rental car at about 2 in the afternoon and was called at 5:30 and told me car was ready for pick-up and that they replaced the brake light switch. i went the next morning to pick up my car and drop off my rental at about 10am. i drove the car home and everything seemed to be fine, but at about 3pm had the same problem again. *tr

while driving in la, ca with speed control set at 65mph i was making a lane change. to allow more room between myself and the following car i accelerated by stepping on the gas pedal. the car speed increased and i removed my foot from the accelerator to return to the set speed. the car did not slow down. i stepped on the brake to #1 take the car off cruise control and #2. to slow down. the car did not slow down and i was now moving at about 80mph. i stepped with my left foot on the brake pedal and tapped the gas pedal. still the car did not slow down and i had difficulty keeping the speed down by applying the brake. i shut off the ignition and as i was in the fast lane (left) i moved off the lane to bring the car to a stop. this happened three more times while driving in la. on 02/03/14 while driving on i15 i wanted to see if i could duplicate the condition. again the accelerator got stuck and i had to shut off the motor. i brought the car to the local hyundai dealer who reported that they could not find anything wrong. as the same thing happened while driving home, i went back to the dealer and on a test drive with a technician the accelerator got stuck again. i need your help and assistance in this matter which is a serious safety issue. *tr

unintended acceleration, had to slam on brakes and put car into neutral in order to prevent shooting into a intersection of oncoming traffic. the car immediately threw a number of codes, and a engine control system condition code, check engine code.... dealer tells me when unloaded off the tow-truck that the brake pedal went to the floor, after 6 days of having the car the dealership service manager is telling me no problem could be found due to not being able to reproduce the problem. *tr

i was parking at a restaurant in an angled parking space near a concrete platform where dumpsters are kept. half way into the space, while i was applying the brake, my car surged forward very fast and slammed into the concrete platform. i had the brake pedal to the floor but the car never stopped. i was wearing my seat belt and was not injured but there was almost $7,000 worth of damage to my car. my car was repaired, but i am under contract of a lease with this car and have to continue to drive it. i am so afraid that this will happen again that i will never allow family or friends to ride in this car. *tr

while pulling into a parking space with my foot on the brake, i suddenly had a unintended and very rapid acceleration. with my foot mashing the brake pedal i was able to slow the car enough to complete the park (it did not completely stop). i immediately shifted the transmission into neutral and the engine really revved up. once i was sure the car was not going anywhere, i checked to make sure i was stepping on the brake (and not on the gas pedal). i then touched the gas pedal (or shifted in park) and the engine went back to normal. i checked the floor mat and it was in normal position. i had a similar but way less dramatic (much lower rpms) a month previous. the car acted fine after this. i reported this to hyundai motor america and they assigned a case number to me. i brought it to a hyundai dealer and they could find nothing wrong. this event was very terrifying and i am not sure i want to drive this car. *tr

while driving down the highway (approx. speeds of 65 mph), while raining, the vehicle started to stutter, speedometer jumped around, and the esc off, abs and awd warning lights flashed and then stayed on. once the lights stayed on (no longer flashing) it seemed as though the vehicle drove "normal." after a day of driving with the lights on they would turn off and problem wouldn't come on again until their was some sort of moisture/precipitation happening; and then once dry would turn off again. had dealer check vehicle (at the time of check no lights/symptoms occurring) and they said it required a new hecu unit and a new wheel speed sensor (approx. cost $3,200). they could neither explain why it only happened when it was wet and did not want to troubleshoot beyond the basic code check. hyundai was contacted and they offered no help - it was only 1,000 over warranty by the time we were able to have it looked at by dealer (which also took 2 weeks to set up appointment with hyundai tech). dealer cleared codes and put dielectric grease on the connections. had no problems for 7 months, and then problem reappeared. only now the problem is a severe safety risk to myself and others around me. there is no telling (can occur at any speed and doesn't matter how long car has been on or how far driven) when the systems mentioned will fail, and when the lights start flashing i have no ability to accelerate the vehicle until all the lights turn steady and stay on. if this were to happen when pulling out/across traffic it could turn fatal. a quick check on the internet and one will find a host of complaints relating to this same problem. a recall needs to be issued before someone is injured! *tr
