Safety incident date:

the brake lines have suddenly blown out on two occasions, and had to be replaced. these occured during nornal highway driving, on about 6/29/06, and around 10/27/09. the undercarriage had not been exposed to corrosive conditions or significant off-road use. i recently heard that this may have been an all-to-frequent occurence in this vehicle.....and that there may have been (or will be) a recall, and hopefully some sort of reimbursement. please advise. *js

on may 20, 2012 when moving my gmc 1500 pick up truck from my driveway at low speed i stepped on the brake only to have the pedal go all the way to the floor. this is the second time this occurred in about six months. on or about october 21, 2011 i also lost my brakes when parking the truck at a local strip mall. the required repair was for a corroded brake line. thank god that both times i was traveling slowly. at highway speed i could easily have be killed. please check this out!! *tr

when slowing down at an intersection stop light, at the speed of under 10 mph, the abs brakes suddenly kicked in and pulsated, not allowing the truck to stop. this almost resulted in a rear end collision with a stopped vehicle in front of me. after pulling into a parking lot the same issue happened again, causing me to panic and stump on the brakes hard before running into the parking blocks in front of a business. after taking the vehicle to the mechanics they could not diagnose a problem. even though there was no abs warning light or error code, we elected to replace both abs speed sensors as a precaution. the problem still existed. i decided to have both front and rear brakes including rotors replaced as a precaution. the problem still accures with every slower speed attemp to stop. i am very reluctant to drive the vehicle and when i due, i have to begin my braking well in advance and at a increased distance from where i would like to stop. *tt

purchased truck 11/10/2011 with 3 miles on it. at 4,000 miles the trucks brakes started pulsating and shimming while appling brakes going down hill. took it to dealer , they resurfaced front rotors. good till 5,700 miles and it started doing this again, but worse, also problems just braking any where. took back to dealer, now they resurfaced rear drums. i'm very disappointed in this new vehicle's braking system. they wrote the brakes were warped during both visits, and no reason as to why this is happening to my new vehicle. *tt

was heading down the street, coming to a stop sign. slowing down, got to about 9 mph, and then the brake pedal went to the floor, and was unable to stop in time and went into the intersection and finally stopped 30 feet after the stop sign with the brake pedal all the way on the floor. got the truck home, somewhat safely, and found out that all of the brake lines were rusted, and ended up having to replace all of the lines due to them crumbling when touching them. *tr

brake fluid began leaking from under the driver side door. closer inspection revealed the brake line had corroded and began to leak. this was replaced in january 2011. after replacing both front brake pads and pressing the brake pedal, the brake line on the passenger side burst and after inspecting this brake line as well, it was corroded and finally gave way due to the extra pressure exerted by the new unworn brake pad. the amount of corrosion seemed excessive for this to happen so suddenly. in both cases, the vehicle was not in motion and no harm was caused due to early recognition of the problem. *tr

while on an errand there seemed to be a sudden, extreme decrease in braking ability. we were still able to stop with brake to the floor if we allowed plenty of time to do so, however, it felt very unsafe to drive. upon a mechanic's inspection it was determined that the group of brake lines from the abs to master cylinder were completely rusted through and needed to be replaced. the total cost of repairs was $684.95. *tr

tl* the contact owns a 2007 gmc sierra. the contact stated that when the vehicle was decelerated, the anti lock braking system would activate once the vehicle's speed was below 5 mph, causing an increase in stopping distance. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told to remove the fuse. the dealer did not repair the vehicle. there was a manufacturer's recall for the failure however, the contact's vehicle was not included in the recall. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 50,000.

6/5/12 after only 54k miles on my 2002 gmc sierra 1500 2wd pickup, i experienced an instantaneous and complete brake system failure as a direct result of a corroded brake line(s), which burst, causing a complete loss of brake fluid and pressure. the failure occurred one brake application after exiting the off-ramp of a highway; i was very fortunate that the failure occurred at low speed (approx. 15mph) while entering a parking lot. there was no collateral damage or injuries involved. further inspection by the gm dealer reveled that all of the associated brake lines were heavily corroded and prone to failure at some point in the near term. the gm dealer offered to repair the one brake line that had failed for $600.00 and indicated to me that replacing all necessary brake lines would be cost prohibitive. i elected not to have gm repair my vehicle; since the cost for replacing one brake line @ $600.00 is ridiculous! further, replacing the failed brake line only was not acceptable to me since the associated brake lines are close to failing as well. i took the vehicle to a local reputable auto repair facility, who offered a much more reasonable quotation and who performed a comprehensive inspection/repair of multiple suspect brake lines in order to make the vehicle truly safe. i am not happy with gm due to their non-responsiveness of this very serious mechanical problem and associated risk to public safety. i do not believe it is reasonable for brake lines to fail due to corrosion within the first ten years of operation; especially, for a vehicle with only 54k miles. this is truly a public safety issue that needs to be addressed, however, i have no confidence that gm will act without federal intervention. disappointed in gm - *tr

the problem is a totally rusted-out set of steel brake lines throughout the gmc truck. the burst brake line is in the engine compartment. it is the line that runs from the antilock brake distribution point (attached to the frame beneath the driver seat). it runs along the frame, above the frame rail and past the steering box, and then makes a right turn beneath the radiator to the passenger side of the truck, where it exits into the wheel well and connects to the flexible brake hose on the passenger side. the steel line burst in the area adjacent to the steering box, so that it sprays brake fluid all over the steering box whenever the brake pedal is depressed. this quickly emptied the reservoir on the master cylinder leaving almost no brakes at all. there is very minimal braking available with the pedal fully depressed the floor. i initially examined the system to see if there is any chance of a do-it-yourself repair but quickly abandoned that idea. all of the brake lines are badly corroded and covered with scale, so there is no chance of cutting out the bad segment, double flaring the ends, and splicing-in a short segment to replace the rusted-out portion of the brake line. all of the brake lines throughout the truck are badly rusted and likely will fail again if left in place (according to the gmc service manager). the brake line that failed burst in a part of the engine compartment that would seem to not even be exposed to road salt, since it is inside the engine compartment and relatively shielded from salt spray and road grime by the body, wheel well and frame rail. the dealer service manager in murphy, nc estimates that it will take one of his mechanics almost a full day to remove all of the bad brake lines and fabricate replacements (these lines are not available in prefabricated form from gmc. *js
