we were driving north of philadelphia, pa on 08/10/00. the left front tire suddenly went flat. i immediately pulled over to the right shoulder. i observed that the tire needed to be replaced. jacobs towing was contacted to come to the roadside and provide a tire change. (cost $50) when we arrived in maryland, 08/12/00, i took the flat to firestone at 1492-94 annapolis rd., odenton, md. a man wearing a blue shirt with red letters "firestone" no id tag, assisted us. he gave the work order to jeremy to check the tire for any road hazard damage. there was none. jeremy found a leak near the valve stem. jeremy said the valve stem is split and also noticed a "bubble" on the outside of the tire approximately 4-6 inches from the valve stem. this was seperate from the damage that the tire sustained while the vehicle sat on the flat tire. jeremy removed the tire from the rim and inspected the entire tire. he observed a large patch of rubber missing from the inside of the tire in the exact location as the outside "bubble." jeremy said, "it looks like your tire exploded on the inside, but i need to let my manager see this." the manager said, "that's natural." the manager proceeded to try to find various reasons for the deformity inside the tire, none of which he could fully explain. he even went as far as to state that someone must have stood on the valve stem, thus causing the damage. he also tried to prove that the hubcap caused the damage, which i quickly disproved. the manager refused to exchange the tires and refused to give me his name upon request. i purchased a "spare" for $111.34. this is the second tire that has been replaced on the rv. the first had a defective tread. the firestone dealer in houston, tx exchanged it. it also had the same id information as this tire. all the tires on the rv are from the vdil plant. since there currently is a recall on passenger tires from this plant, i am greatly concerned about the safety of these tires.

due to a bad valve stem, the tire and rim were removed from the vehicle and taken to a tire dealership (big o tires) in monument co. for repair. the valve stem was removed and replaced without the trie being removed from the rim. the tire was reinflated to manufacturer specsof 80 psi cold. the tire and rim were picked up and placed in the back of my jeep grand cherokee for transportation back to my residence. after about 5 minutes of being in the back of the jeep, the tire exploded tearing a 6 inch gash in the sidewall of the tire, an inch and a quarter from the tread surface. the tire had been inflated all of 10 minutes when it exploded. i immedeately returned back to big o tires and confirmed the tire pressure they had placed in the tire. i showed them the tire and explained how it seemed to seld-distruct in the back on my vehicle. again, the tire was not under pressure as it was only in the back of my jeep. they , big o tires, felt that there had to be a manufacturer defect in the tire and suggested that it be taken to firestone for examination. the tire was taken to firestone of chaple hills. upon examination, they immedeately identified the problem as the tire being cut from the outside and not their problem. i explained the nature of the incident numerous times to the firestone people but received no help. i returned to big o tires and advised them of what firestone had said. they explained that a cut in the tire could clearly not be the case as if it had been cut to the depth of cutting the sidewall belting, it would have never been able to hold the pressure that they had put into it. they continue to believe, as do i, that there was some type of defect in the construction of the tire. firestone treated me as if i had cut the tire and made up a story in order to save having to purchase a new tire. there was no reason to purchase a new tire, prior to this explosion, as the tread wear was minimal. tire valve stem not accessible on outer rear tires on dualies: when the vehicle is delivered to the customer, the outer tire valve stem is not accessible for consumers to check for proper inflation. you have to have valve stem extenders put on the inner as an additional parts. many people who buy a new rv don't think about the fact that the current access to the inner tire valve stem is inadequate. the outer tire valve stem faces back towards the inner tire and is behind the rim. fleetwood (motor home manufacturer) and ford (chassis manufacturer) and other vehicle manufacturers should be required to have the tire valve stems accessible for obvious reasons of driving safety and tire care. this problem/oversight should not be left to consumers to add on additonal features to make monitoring the correct tire pressure easier.*ak
