i bought my 1995 bronco new from academy ford in laurel md. i have kept up all maintenance and warranty repairs. a few days ago in mid april 2005 i noticed some corrosion on the rear spring shackle brackets. i inspected the bracket closer and found that the brackets had originally been painted with a heavy coat of black paint. under this black paint on all the brackets corrosion has completely destroyed the integrity of the bracket. large flakes of rusted metal about 1/16" thick came off in my hand. i'm not sure how much of the bracket metal is left. as soon as i ascertained the extent of the corrosion i made an appointment to have the situation assessed by my local ford service department. my concern is that these critical brackets should never have rusted to a state of complete decay . these brackets hold the rear leaf springs to the frame of the vehicle. should they fail due to corrosion i feel the consequences would undoubtablely be catastrophic. *ak this vehicle has not been subjected to any undue treatment. i do not pull trailers or plow snow or any other conditions which might cause undue stresses to the vehicle's frame. i was very careful in winter to wash off any road salts or sands that could accelerate corrosion. but my best efforts to prolong the vehicles lifetime are thwarted by a process that did not protect a critcal bracket whose failure is emminent. the bronco is a fine vehicle, i've had a few problems that seemed reasonable for me to fix, but the corrosion to the rear spring shackel brackets is unacceptable. these brackets might over the lifetime of the vehicle show some surface rust but not to be corroded to the point of failure.*ak

1. rear leaf spring support on 1993 ford f-150. the design of the rear leaf spring support, let water and salt collect in the support. causing rapid rust and failure of support. this could cause an accident and possible loss of human life if this part would fail at highway speeds. the ford dealer here in town told me at the parts counter, when i bought this part that they sell 5 or 7 supports a week. this tells me this is a design flaw. in the rear leaf spring support. 2. the emission system has a defect in the design which lets exhaust fumes into the cab. the pipe in the engine compartment which is connected to the heads of the engine, is suppose to pump fresh air into the exhaust to help it burn cleaner. but the problem is with this year is that it splits apart and rust causing fumes into the cab. these problems are not just mine. i know men who have the same year truck 1993 ford f-150 with a v-8 302 in it that have had the problem. this points out a design flaw that is both safety for human but also emission. i have contacted ford about these concerns. short answer is they tell me to fix it myself. i also realize that i am talking about a 1993 truck. my truck is in very good shape only 61,000 miles on it. these are not normal wear and tear issues. i believe that these issues are design problems with the truck. not just mine but other men that i know. i would you to look into these points please. *jb

investigated complaint of clunking noise and poor handling of truck normally driven by my son. it is a 1995 ford f150 2wd w/ 5.0l. found rear hangers on both leaf springs had rusted out and springs were now bearing directly on the bottom of the truck bed with no connection to frame. shackles were also rusted to a dangerous state. also observed a fracture in a similarly rusted and weakened front suspension component which will have to be replaced in the near future. ground off rivets and removed hangers and shackles. replaced with parts purchased from local ford dealer. he knew exactly what i needed. stated that this was happening to many other owners of 1990 ford pickups. total cost for parts ~$150 so far plus ~ 6 hours of labor. *jb

tl*- the contact stated that while driving his 2003 ford f550 with a trailer attached (failure mileage 61000) at 60 mph, the track rod hanger brackets failed without warning. the rear of the vehicle began to swing from side to side. the contact had to apply the trailer brakes to gain control in order to pull the vehicle to the side of the road. the vehicle was taken to a ford dealer who directed the contact to the fontaine modification company. the fontaine modification company supplied the hanger bracket replacement parts free of charge, but the contact had to pay for the labor involved in the repair.*jb

the rear brackets holding the rear leaf springs are rusting. the one on the driver's side has rusted through and the leaf spring is no longer supported, it is resting on the underside of the truck bed. the other is not far behind. both appear to have rusted from the inside - meaning the paint/undercoating is peeling away. *tr
