the air ride will raise the backend 10-12" from the top of the tire to the top of the wheelwell. this has happened while driving 70+mph and makes the vehicle buck violently and is difficult to control. it has been to the shop 8+times for repair and they've replaced everything possible. they replaced the master control panel last month and it's gone up 5 times since then. i have not taken it in each time it happens because my servicing dealer, john markel ford, said it must still be running for them to get codes from the computer and sometimes it raises up after i turn the key off. they are unable to "document" the problem and can't reproduce it so the zone rep won't replace it. he's offered $1500 toward the purchase of a new vehicle but that's it. *ak

auto load leveling suspension failed june 2002. dealer found wiring problem that caused short and caused sensor to fail. when system fails, system drops rear of car down on axle with no suspension. vehicle is very unsafe to drive especially over rough road and when cornering. i complained to the dealer and ford that this was a major problem and would be especially dangerous if towing a trailer when this happened. in may of 2003 system failed while towing a fairly heavy trailer. trailer tongue hit the pavement. vehicle was very unstable to drive and get safely off the road. this time the problem was a relay that failed. vehicles with this load leveling system need to be recalled and modified to freeze the system in it's current state when a failure is detected and not to let out all of the air in the suspension. there needs to be a way to disable the system and manually add or remove air from the air shocks in this situation. i prefer to remove the "automatic" control from this system and control it manually. *jb

my 1997 ford expedition xlt rear air suspension at times will "lower" to an extremely shallow height. this is most likely to occur overnight; although it does not always happen. in fact, it has been known to occur after the vehicle has been sitting for as little as an hour and a half. on other occasions, the vehicle does not appear to lower at all, even after sitting overnight. the dealership cannot seem to diagnose the problem. another mechanic believes that the problem is with either the vehicle's computer system, which appears to be signaling the valves on the air bags to release air but not signaling the valves to close at the proper point. he further suggested (either alternatively or perhaps additionally) that the problem might lie with the air compressor which is not properly regulating the release of air from these valves. he discounted any suspicion that this was any type of a leak in either the air bags or air lines, since no leak had been detected by the dealership and since the vehicle did not regularly lower after extended periods of idle time. *la

warning light for suspension system with air leveler on 4x4, suspension warning light comes on several times a week since the vehicle was new. vehicle never leveled with a load on the hitch. the air compressor runs a lot and became very noisy over the years. the vehicle rocks back and forth, in, right side goes up and down a few inches, will not level under load. never felt safe to tow anything which was the purpose for buying the vehicle. the dealer where i purchased the vehicle refuses to accept the vehicle for service. took in 3 - 4x a year for same and they refused to look at anything except the computer readout. presented list of related nhtsa reports and ford said they do not use them under warranty. purchased fords best extended warranty which will expire in 3 months and the problem still exists. compressor pump broke a week ago and they refuse to look at anything else. initial recommendation was to disconnect warning light. second recommendation was to sell vehicle if i didn't like it. no obligation for the 45,000.00 paid. cannot sell vehicle because the warning light comes on all the time and vehicle never level. *cb

the air suspension system. this is the second 1999 expedition that i have owned and the same thing has happened to both and i am unable to get any help from anybody as to why this has happened again. on both vehicles the air suspension stopped working in the rear section causing the vehicle not to lift up and making the vehicle bounce all across the road if you try to drive it. it does not raise back up at all and thus making the vehicle not able to be driven. i want to know am i the only one that is having this issue and also why with two of the same model vehicles that i have owned? is this a defect? everyone that i have talked to says that this is a very costly fix, maybe ranging from $600 plus. and i almost feel as though i am being robbed by having to fix the same problem that i had with the first 1999 expedition that i owned.... please help. *jb
