i purchased a ford f150 new in january of 2004. at approx 4000 miles the vehicle developed a loud whine in the rear axle.differential. the dealer replaced the gears in the differential and the whine disappeared. shortly after, the vehicle developed a vibration that occurred at around 45-55 mph, worse at just over 50. the dealer replaced the entire rear axle assembly but the problem persists. i was told by the service manager that this is a problem with all these trucks and there is no fix. i am very dissatisfied with this truck.*ak

was on a slick road. i was going 15 miles an hour, when my 2000 ford f-150 spun completely around. when the truck spun around it went towards the ditch backwards. when i hit the ditch the truck flipped onto the passenger side. when the tow truck arrived on the scene he informed me that the rear tire broke off the axle. i had never heard of this happening at such a slow speed, neither had the tow truck driver, especially since it was a heavy half ton load axle . when we were looking at the axle in the light it appeared that it crystallized and snapped. i am a welder and work with metal every day and the axle look almost like cast. *nm

my 2003 ford explorer was serviced at dick edwards ford in junction city , ks to replace a left hand rear axle shaft seal on the 12th of febuary 2007. vehicle was picked up at the dealership by my wife. on the 13th of febuary she was driving home from work (about 3-5 miles) she called me on her cell phone and said she could hear noises, smelled something burning and the rear of the car was moving around and the brake pedal was low. i told her to proceed home with caution. when she arrived home i looked at the vehicle, and noted the lh rear wheel assembly was at a 30 deg angle. i called dick edward ford and they informed me to have it towed to the dealership. today they implied it was a bearing failure. i looked at the vehicle, spoke to the mechanic and i noted it was a rear axle shaft retention nut malfunction. the nut had backed out on the axle to the point that the assembly was about depart from the vehicle. the mechanic wanted to blame the axle bearing, which was destroyed. this nut if improperly torqued, or the assembly is not installed properly prior to torquing the nut, the nut can become loose and back off, especially since it is rh thread, there is not a cotter pin or anything holding this thing together, only a torqued nut. they then told me that they would not pay for it as it was a coincidence this happened. i refuse to pay. i have pictures of the vehicle setting in my driveway. i should have taken pictures at the dealership when it was taken apart. if my loved one had been on the interstate doing 70 mph this would have probably have allowed the wheel assembly to depart from the vehicle resulting in a catastrophic accident. and possible death to her as well as others. how many other vehicles out there with the same poor engineering design ? *jb

my problem is with the rear differential as well as the hub bearing assembly in the 2002 ford explorer, 60,000 miles on the vehicle. terrible grinding sound in rear wheels, both rear bearings in wheels were bad, as well as differential noise and leaking of fluid, e no recall on these issues, but i have found thousands of complaints for this same issue. it was a safety violation not to recall these. if the rear wheels lock it would send vehicle into a spin, or travel off the road, why have you not remedied this with ford? you were taking a great legal risk, by not looking out for the safety of consumers. *ak

currently own a 2002 explorer xlt with only 65k miles on it. the transmission is in need of a rebuild because is slip from time to time. the rear differential seals are leaking. the entire rear of the vehicle makes a humming noise so i suspect that a rear bearing is going bad. not to mention the 4wheel drive system has not worked since i bought it a little over a year ago. i've had intermittent issues with the air bag control module and also the backup alarm system. there is nothing but poor write-ups about this truck all over the internet. all the same problems i'm experiencing are problems many other drivers have also had. *tr

i have a 2002 ford explorer v6 and in the past 2 years i have replaced both left and right rear wheel bearing and about to replace the one on the right side again. i called ford and they told me they could only recall a vehicle if you ladies and gentle call for a recall. i have spent over $1200 dollars on this problem and about to spend another $600. i checked on line and realized i was not the only one with this problem. hundreds of others have had this problem with the explorer but still no recall. i was just wondering what should i do about my problem. i'm tired of spending money on a truck that barely six years old and had less than 70,000 miles when this problem first occurred. *tr
