gas tank burst a spraying leak of fuel at the side filler tube connector without an accident occuring. approximately five gallons of fuel sprayed out, causing fuel to run out on the bottom of the chassis and dripping out on the sides of the car.*ak my wife's shoes and feet were soaked with gasoline from just standing by the car. this leak is not from a breather tube at the top of the tank. this leak is at the middle right side of the tank at the filler tube connection. has a recall been recognized? this could be disasterous in an impact auto crash! the fire department was called out to assist the potentially hazardous fuel spraying.

this is a follow up to my complaint from last year (odi 10038825). i removed the gas tank from my van and found the leaks (several) were caused by the metal tank rubbing against the frame cross rails. *ak the tank is metal to metal contact with the frame of the van, there is no isolation of any kind. this seemd to be a serious design flaw (to me anyway) and i called the ford motor company to let them know. ford expressed no concern, since there had not been any deaths or injuies reported. i can't believe that i am the only person that has experienced this condition. i have digital photographs of the frame and tank, prior to having it repaired. i took the tank to a shop and had the leaks welded, i also cut up an inner tube and placed it between the tank and frame rails, to prevent this from happening again. i think there are lots of ford vans rolling on the roads of this country that have the same problem and it is only a matter of time before one of them blows up!

while driving on the freeway my van lost almost all power, dropping from 65 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour. i had to immediately try and move over to the slow lane. i quickly lost all power and my stopped running. part of my left rear was slightly out in the traffic lane. i called a tow truck to have my van towed to the ford dealership that maintains my van. the dealer informed me my fuel tank had "delaminated", the inside coating had deteriorated and had clogged the entire fule system and that the tank, filters, pumps and all lines had to be replaced. i understand moving parts failing, but i have never heard of a fuel tank failing except through puncture or exterior deterioration through rusting. repairs will cost several thousands of dollars. the dealership mechanics say this has occured on a number of occasions with ford diesels, ranging in mileage from 30,000 to 200,000. the ford motor company knows of the problem but has said the cause is from using additives or from the fuel. i do not use additives and have used only proper fuel from reputable companies. i approached ford motor company for assistance in covering the cost of repairs but was told they are not responsible. this is a known problem caused by either a poorly engineered or incorrectly applied interior tank lining that fails with no warning and causes either total or near total loss of power. if this occurs on a crowded, fast moving freeway, the danger is obvious. i was lucky to have been driving at a time of day when there was little traffic. ford motor company refuses to admit there is a dangerous situation with their diesel fuel tank lining material. i now am having a new tank being put into my van, but what is there to ensure me that the same situation will not happen again? it is not mileage dependent according to those who should know, the ford mechanics. such a situation is not only unsatisfactory, but extremely unsafe for both myself and others on the road.*ak

dt: the contact stated that the lining on the inside of the gas tank flaked off and fell into the gasoline. as a result of the flaking, the pieces of the lining flowed through the fuel system and into the injectors. the contact was driving at 65 mph and when the flakes became engaged the injector, the vehicle immediately slowed to 35 mph. this almost caused the contact to have a serious accident in the morning rush hour traffic. the dealer was the one that found the problem with the lining. this has been fixed by the consumer the vehicle is a 2001 ford e350.*ak

we have 4 f550 buses that have had the gas tank replaced twice on each bus do what we believe is coating failure. we now have an f450 that is experiencing the same conditions, we are forced to replace the gas tank on this vehicle as well. we take our vehicles to ford miramar truck center, and have had a ford factor representative look into the problem only to tell us its not a tank failure issue. after what will now be 9 replaced gas tanks, i truly believe there is an issue here that must be seriously looked into. on a side note, after the second tank failure we changed gas stations thinking the problem was bad fuel-not the problem. *nm
