last year i started noticing a gas smell when filling. beginning of this year i noticed gas leak on ground when filling. i am now in the process of replacing the gas fill pipe, it has deteriorated to an unusable condition. whether this is because of the gasohaul used in mn. or poor quality in the manufacturing i couldn't tell you,but when i ordered the part they told me the same thing happened to their delivery truck. i believe this is an unsafe condition and should be looked into before there is an explosion or fire in a gas station while someone is filling their truck. please contact me if more information is needed or what is being done with this matter. *tr

i have had nothing but problems with this car since i purchased it in 2010 with 32,000 miles on it. i purchased it in april and by the end of the first summer of driving it began to lose all power when driving slowly i would not be able turn the wheel or anything. luckily all times it happened i was in a parking lot or at a stop sign. ford said it needed a computer update which was not covered under the warranty. i paid 66.00 for the update, it did not work my car still lose power sometimes when coasting. my car also accelerates without warning. this is very scary because this is my main vehicle and i have two small children. ford says there they haven't witnessed the issue while driving it so they can't find the problem. also with in that first year of owning this car my wrench light came on and remained on took it to the dealer and it now needed the throttle body replaced. it was still under warranty so i "only" needed to pay the 100.00 deductible. i did and it was replaced. sometimes the car will also unexpectedly grind to a halt. no idea what that is but it doesnâ??t happen frequently enough for them to witness it so they can't find the problem. to add to the list the passenger door is not sealed correctly and whenever it rains the inside of the door becomes filled with water, but thatâ??s not covered under warranty at all. and finally the paint on the hood is bubbling and chipping. the car is four years old now and no longer under the factory warranty so they won't cover it. i feel completely taken advantage of and i have no idea where to turn or what to do but i feel this car will not last the length of the loan. and i feel very unsafe driving my children in this vehicle. it makes me sick. i will never ever buy another ford. ford should step up and take responsibility before someone gets seriously injured. *tr

i have had fuel tank issues for a year now and they are getting worse. my gauge stopped working about 13 months ago which was no big deal. now i am unable to put more then 4-5 gallons of gas in at a time. the safety sensor stops the pump from filling up my tank and if i try to do it a little at a time it just shoots gas out of my fill area and gets everywhere. i have been doused in gas and i have run out of gas in very bad areas. the sensor replacement was only a temporary fix, now it's impossible to put gas in my tank and it's starting to run poorly. i have to stop everyday for gas. this is a malfunctioning ford part that should be recalled and replaced. i have run out of gas and when that happens every thing shuts down including the power steering. it was dangerous and difficult to maneuver my truck, i was getting on the freeway and the on ramp was a semi-circle. *js

Ford Escape 2004

Safety incident date:
Mar 06, 2012
Location:
West Middlesex, PW

at first, my escape only started hesitating on rainy days when i got to about 45-55 mph. at first i thought i had bad gas so i stopped at auto zone to get dry gas for it. this seem to work like a charm and i thought the problem was fixed. then it happened again; spudering, not accelerating, car shaking, and engine light began to flash once i reached 45mph. this had been an issue for a few months on and off, then one sunny day its began hesitating and misfiring very badly now not only in 5th gear but at idle and 1st gear. it misfired and hesitated every time i drove it for a week before the mechanic could get it into the shop. i did a lot of research on the two codes that the engine was pulling p0305 and p0316 pending. i found out that there were a lot of people who had the same problem as me when their escapes reach 90,000 miles or higher, some even worse. people are saying that the issues being caused are a result of ford putting in the wrong spark plugs which is causing the computer chip to burn out leading to misfires in the coil packs. my mechanic just informed me that it will cost $400 to fix two of the coils and there is only a 50/50 chance that it will fix the problem (for now). he said it will probably happen again but there is no telling how long that might be, it might be right away, a week from now, or a year. will all these people having the same issue with no way to tell if it is actually going to fix the problem there should be a recall or at least a warning to owners saying what may happen once the car gets over 100,000 miles. *tt

fuel pump failed while driving vehicle at freeway speeds on 101 south on the waldo grade approaching the golden gate bridge. vehicle lost power half way up the grade and slowed to 10 mph. limped vehicle to off ramp. i am an ase certified master mechanic, i also hold my california smog license. i've worked as a mechanic for 30 years. upon getting the vehicle home i diagnosed the concern i found the fuel tank full of metal that had flaked fromt he walls of the fuel tank. i found the fuel pickup in the tank plugged with filings, the fuel pump ruined, and the fuel filter full of metal and rust. i sent the tank to who coated the fuel tank for me. stated that he continuously sees these ford tank coming from all the dealerships in the area. upon doing some research on the internet i found that this is a widespread problem with ford fuel tanks. my total cost for this repair in parts and repairs to the fuel tank has come to $1,200.00 wholesale cost, not including my labor or any parts retail markup. i have owned this vehicle since new and always run good quality fuel in my vehicle and topped up the tank weekly or more often to reduce the possibility of moisture in my fuel system. i have not filled up the fuel tank and run the engine yet, and hope that there is no further damage to my fuel injectors or fuel system. if there is i could be out another $4,000 to 5,000 just in parts. i am curious as to why if there seems to be such a widespread problem our government has not recalled these vehicles? it is clear to me that ford is producing vehicles with substandard fuel systems and that there is a known defect that ford is not owning. the public should not be held liable ofr ford's design flaws. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) *tt

i was driving on the freeway when the engine shut off and 'master vehicle electrical hazrard warning lamp' came on. fortunately i only had to cross one lane in modest traffic. the owner's manual instructions state 'stop the vehicle, shift to park, turn the key to off position and attempt to restart the vehicle. if the fault remains, the vehicle may require resetting the shut-off switches.' following the instructions, i was able to restart the vehicle and continue driving without resetting any switches. the warning light remained off and has not come back on again. i have sheduled an appointment to take the vehicle to a dealer. in the mean time i have searched the web for drivers with similiar experiences and have come across quite a few. i personally do not feel safe driving a vehicle that can shut off without warning, especially on a busy highway. the fact that ford has instructions in the owners manual for 'resetting the fuel pump/high voltage shut off switches' is alarming in itself essentially i can be traveling in urban rush hour traffic and a computer can decide to shut off the engine. i urge you to require ford to address this defect. *tt

while entering a highway via an on-ramp doing about approximately 45 miles per hour i attempted hard acceleration to pick up speed and merge in to traffic that was doing approximately 65-70 miles per hour. when i depressed the throttle the vehicle did not accelerate, but it started to hesitate and shake. the check engine light came on and the vehicle would not go over 40 miles per hour. this almost caused an accident situation as i expected the vehicle to accelerate when it did not. i was then forced to pull over to the shoulder and shut the vehicle off. after restarting the vehicle the cel had cleared and the vehicle was operating normally. no code was stored in the pcm to indicate what the issue was. this happened several more times since the first incident. once while towing a 4000lb boat/trailer which also almost caused a severe accident. ford has found nothing wrong with the vehicle and concludes there is nothing they can do since no codes were stored. i will note that after receiving tsb 12-2-10 the vehicle will still exhibit the same symptoms described above, but now the check engine light does not come on. vehicle will stall, go in to "limp mode" with no indication that anything is wrong. only resolution is to turn the vehicle off and back on to clear the status. this creates dangerous situations when on a highway. completely unacceptable. *tt

driving down a two lane road in the early evening, i was 3 or 4 cars back in a long line of over a dozen vehicles. we were all stuck behind one slow moving vehicle. a chance came up to pass and i pulled into the other lane. after stepping on the throttle the truck developed a misfire. it lost nearly all power and began decelerating. in the time since pulling out to pass, a semi truck had popped up over an upcoming hill. by this point, the vehicles previously behind me had moved forward and filled in my place in line. i began evaluating my options. i was now moving slower than the traffic in the right lane, but there weren't any openings to move back over. i examined the shoulder on the left side of the road looking for safe places to pull over. there were none in the immediate vicinity. after several very tense seconds, the vehicle suddenly regained power. i had just enough time to accelerate to an opening in the right lane and get back over. likely cause: condensation in the charge air cooler ingested into the engine upon a call for power. since the first incident this has occurred several more times. every single time has been after cruising for some period at less than half throttle, followed by a sudden acceleration in humid or rainy conditions. ford claims to be aware of the problem and working on a fix. however after waiting for over 8 months since my first incident i'm starting to have my doubts. i have heard reports from numerous other people saying this exact same thing has happened to them. some of those are over a year old and are still waiting on a fix from ford. being aware of this problem i try not to put myself into a situation that will require the sudden application of power. however i know no matter how well you plan, eventually you find yourself in a bad situation. i just hope when that occurs it isn't a humid or rainy day. *tt

engine, the turbocharged v-6 ecoboost, stalled out (tried to die and shook and and shuddered like nothing i have ever experienced in 50 years of driving) when attempting to pass a truck on the interstate and again when pulling away from an exit stop sign after traveling in cold rain. glad i was on a freeway vice two lane road. takes about 15 to 20 seconds for the engine to get power back. also it did the same thing 3 weeks earlier, on same cross country trip, in northern idaho when i attempted to accelerate to freeway speed after driving in wet snow for about 1/2 hour. really felt unsafe. i reported it to ford. they acknowledged there is a problem but they have not done anything to fix my truck after i reported the near disastrous drivability issue - like can't be trusted to adequately perform in rain and i live in the pacific northwest. *tt

i was driving home and all of a sudden there was an explosion under the hood and it sounded like part of the exhaust system gave way. i pulled over and found out that a spark plug had blown out of the head. the only one to ever touch the engine was ford and that they had replaced a spark plug several years ago. i got on line and found out there are literally thousands of these spark plug ejections. i was wondering if there was a recall on the problem ? the fact that the super-heated air and mixture fuel spraying all over the underneath of the hood is a extreme danger, it would seem that would be a safety recall. *tr

when i let my foot off the gas pedal the engine continues to accelerate. i thought it was the floor mat catching on the gas pedal. on saturday may 12 i was coming up my street at about 25 mph and the car wouldn't stop and i came zooming into my driveway. i slammed on the brakes and put the car into neutral and the engine was racing then i turned off the key. when i restarted the engine the problem was gone. i checked the floor mat but i found no problem with the mat. this is the first time i was sure the floor mat was not the problem. last week may 24 2012 my wife used the car and said she had the same problem and it wasn't the floor mat. yesterday may 28, 2012 as i approached a busy intersection with a stop sign i let my foot off the gas pedal and the car continued to accelerate into the intersection. by the time i could react i was in the middle of the intersection. i just barely avoided a collision with possible personal injury. this was the last straw with this dangerous problem, so i put the car in my garage and took the cover off the accelerator control leaver. i found the problem quickly. the cause of this unintended acceleration is the cruise control cable has become disconnected from the throttle leaver and is catching on the throttle leaver, so the lever can't return. i tried to reconnect this cable but the plastic retainer on this cheap cable has become defective and will not reconnect. i have now tied the cable back so it can not interfere with the throttle lever. i have contacted ford about this problem and issued a complaint. there are no recalls regarding this issue. this problem is a serious safety issue and beyond the scope of vehicle maintenance. this issue could cause a fatal accident to an unsuspecting driver. i have documented this issue with photographs. please contact me for a copy of the photo. *tr
