was driving my 2006 f350 sd lariat dually with only 7,858 miles, hauling a gooseneck trailer with a horse inside and steering started to shimmy once i got up to highway speed (55 mph) on i-85n enroute to a horse show. placed my foot on the brake and got no response. i could not stop the 15,000# of truck, trailer and horse but was able to get off the road and cruise into a large empty parking lot and slow down enough where i could safely apply the emergency brake without going through the windshield or injuring my horse. tires were fine but there was a distinctive smell of burning pad against red hot metal and tremendous smoke was billowing out from behind the passenger side right front wheel where the rotor is seated. brake caliper seized onto the rotor, warping it and destroying the brake pad. post police escort, had it towed to the dealership and $2,400 later (which included new batteries and 2 new front tires), all the offending items were replaced. i specifically asked that the rear calipers and brake mechanism be checked and they assured me they did and nothing was wrong. however, coming directly home from the dealership, my driver side rear wheel brake seized with the same exact problem. again, had to be towed to the dealership and another $1,600 later (this amount includes 4 more tires), replacing everything having to do with the rear brakes. in my research on this matter, i have discovered that this is not an isolated but a common problem possibly due to faulty hcu (hydraulic control unit) equipment. could have easily been a tragic accident on a very busy interstate. this is most definitely a safety issue. a fire also could have easily started as the brake fluid pumped back into the main engine area of the truck. though i have replaced both front and rear brakes there is no assurance that this danger will not recur. *tr

since purchasing our vehicle new we have had several incidents of sudden acceleration. our first complaint was filed within the 1st month (odi id number : 10330335). within 16000 miles we had 3 incidents. all of these incidents were at highway speed with the cruise control off. each time we were able to place the gear shift into neutral or stomp on the accelerator pedal until it stopped accelerating. each time the vehicle was taken to the ford dealership, no explanation could be found however on the incident at ~16000 miles the dealership stated they had reprogrammed the computer. we had driven the truck without incident since that time until december 24, 2012 at approximately 0800 hours. my wife was driving westbound on i-40 at approximately 65 mph when the vehicle accelerated on its own. her first reaction was to try to put the vehicle in neutral, however she was unable to move the shift lever. the vehicle accelerated to maximum speed quickly as she attempted to apply the brakes. her ordeal lasted for several minutes and she nearly lost control several times as this section of highway travels through a canyon and has significant curves. she was eventually able to place the vehicle in neutral and coast off the highway. by this point the brakes were ineffective from her trying to stop the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to rich ford. they have had the vehicle from dec. 24 until today. once again they can find nothing wrong with the vehicle. the advice given by the service manager was "when it happens again, turn off the key. don't touch the accelerator at all, and have it towed here." not "if", "when". my wife's response was: "if i live through the next time, i'll do that." *tr

yesterday may 12, 2010 my wife experienced a sudden acceleration in our 1 month old ford f350 cabela edition. from a highway speed of 65 mph the truck, completely on its own, accelerated to over 95 mph. the cruise control was not on and she was not touching any pedals. when she applied the brakes she left some impressive tire marks on the highway but with 650 foot pounds of torque at the rear wheels the truck was not stopping. she put the truck in neutral and the tachometer pegged all the way. she did manage to pull the truck to the side of the road and turn it off. she tried to re-start the vehicle and again without any input from the accelerator the tachometer pegged. she immediately turned the truck off and waited several minutes before restarting. this time the truck idled normally. she took it to richardson ford in albuquerque where we purchased the truck. the service manager told me he knew something really bad had happened because she was crying and visibly shaken. they performed several tests and the codes that came up were ┐excessive speed┐ and something about the exhaust cleaning system stuck in mid cycle. they have now had the truck 2 days and cannot find the cause of the sudden acceleration. i was told by the service representative that according to ford┐s own service database there have been other documented instances of rapid unexplained acceleration on f250 and above trucks. i┐ve done some research and have found this is not a new problem on ford vehicles. we carry our children and grandchildren in this vehicle. i now have a $60,000 vehicle that my wife is afraid to drive. you tell me, what do i do? it┐s obvious to me that it is a computer or programming problem. i would like to see the vehicles computer or the whole vehicle replaced. i purchased a 2008 ford 350 super duty king ranch with a 6.4l diesel and started having throttle problems @ about 5,000 miles. i had repeated problems with throttle response. i was driving down the hwy @ 70mph and the truck just went into idle mode and would not respond to the throttle pedal. i was very lucky to be able to weave thru traffic and pull over to the side of the road. i shut the truck off and sat there for a few minutes then restarted the truck and drove off. on numerous occasions i would start the truck and it would drive a short ways and then kick into idle mode and the engine would not respond to the pedal. i had the truck towed into the ford dealer and they said they could not duplicate the problem. they replaced the throttle pedal sensor and gave it back to me. i filed a complaint with customer service on 6/18/2009 case # [xxx] as the problem continued to happen. i had the truck towed in again and the ford dealer replaced the map sensor. the problem continued to happen and i had the truck towed into the ford dealer again and left it with them. they called me back and said the truck was ready to pkup. i was under the impression that they had changed a part or corrected the problem. i informed them that i was going on a hunting trip to ut in late december and wanted to ensure my truck was in fact repaired. i drove to elko nv and spent the night. the next day (sunday) i started the truck and it kicked into idle mode and would not respond to the throttle. i had it towed to the ford dealer again. the next day they reflased the computer in the truck and said they hoped it would get me home. when i returned home i took the truck into the local ford dealer again. they said they could not duplicate the problem. they did change out the pcm and gave me back the truck but would not confirm they fixed the problem. i was in contact with ford cust service and requested a buy back. they refused. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

toyota vehicles are not the only ones which exhibit unintended acceleration. i own a 2004 ford f-350 heavy duty truck which has periodically surged 500-1000 rpm since about 5k odometer miles. this now occurs about one out of two times i drive the vehicle for an hour or so. i have had it into three different dealerships, numerous times, and they have been unable to identify the cause of the problem. i have been told that they 'can't just throw parts at it' in order to fix it. unfortunately, the time (5 years) portion of the warranty has lapsed, though the truck only has 48k miles, with warranty being 100k miles or 5 years. on another occasion, the engine died after surging while navigating through a turn, causing power steering failure and nearly resulted in my hitting a telephone pole. the following account describes only one incident of many i've experienced in this vehicle┐i┐d be glad to detail others. one month ago, the truck suddenly lurched forward while i was stopped at a light, and i was unable to halt it until i had reached the other side of the intersection. there was a pedestrian who had already crossed in front of the truck, who would have been seriously injured or killed had the timing been different. had there been a vehicle stopped in front of me, or cross-traffic vehicles, there would have certainly been a collision. this incident took place one-half block from a school zone for an elementary school. as a retired educator and former marine, i consider myself able to respond appropriately in precarious situations. yet i drive this vehicle only when i must, and never when weather conditions are at all questionable, even though it┐s my 4 x 4 for winter weather┐my wife and son no longer drive it, ever. i would like your help in convincing ford that this issue is one of safety, and should be covered under warranty until it is resolved. i undoubtedly was not ┐forceful and demanding┐ enough in my numerous previous trips to the dealerships. *tr

1. driving 2. cruise control does not disengage when brake is applied. in fact, when brake is applied, the truck tries to compensate for reduced speed by downshifting and accelerating. i have had it happen twice where it nearly caused me to hit the vehicle in front of me. the dealership verified the problem but could not fix it. they sent me away with the problem still occurring and it is so dangerous that i do not use cruise control at all. 3. dealership attempted to address the problem but couldn't fix it. they verified the problem and documented it in my file with them. *tr
