we lost our odometer, speedometer, cruise control and air conditioning on a recent trip from va to nc. at first, replacing the #10amp fuse took care of the problem. within one week, the fuses began to blow as soon as the car is turned on. now, it blows the fuse each time a new one is replaced. therefore, no odometer, speedometer, cool air, cruise control, etc. after a lot of research on line, we have found numerous sources with incredible documentation and consistency showing that this problem has been pervasive across ford windstar products in the age range of our van. we have not had a fire, but there is enough of a record on this, that something should be done about it with ford before someone has a fire that causes death or injury. thanks for a response on what we can expect next. *tr

my instrument cluster failed due to the wiring in the dashboard from the factory was chafing on each other and shorted out. i first thought it was just a fuse but they kept blowing. so i brought it to one dealer they said the cluster needed replacement due to a short in it and would cost $600.00 because my warranty ran out in nov. 2007 but the car only has 28k on it, it's a pleasure car. i called ford care and they said since i have no service record with them there was nothing they could do for me. i brought the car next to my local mechanic and he ordered a new cluster through ford and brought it to a separate dealer where they found the wiring problem and also replaced the cluster costing me $591.00 plus the cost of the diagnosis from the first dealer of $177.00. i feel ford should still pay for these repairs due to the fact it came from the factory like this. *tr

the sliding car icon displays quite often, always on dry pavement. usually for a short time during that time the brakes do not operate properly. they act as though the abs have engaged themselves and make it almost impossible to stop. it has happened over 10 times to me in the 15 months that i have owned the truck. the dealer checked the problem and reported that there was nothing wrong. *tr

this will be our 5th ignition replacement since purchasing this car new in 2000. the first three were covered. since we have to pay another 500 for this one we have been making due by leaving the key in and not completely turned off by just a hair. or on the occasion we forget and take it out we have to beat it with the back of a screwdriver to get it to engage. this has caused me to get out and leave the car in drive on several occasions since i got use to putting the car in park before removing the key i can no longer remove the key so i am distracted by digging out the clicker so i can get back into my car. this is so dangerous! my car rolled across the library parking lot and into another car. this could have been a child run over! all because of this ignition problem. i have never left my car in drive in over 32 years before this trouble! i have been stranded in relentless heat with children and freezing temps again with children. this is with out question a situation that needs to be recalled. we should not have to keep paying for a design flaw. it is not from over use or heavy key chains. there are many many days i don't even leave the house to use it. i don't stop and start the car a lot. this is a very dangerous problem and will not be taken seriously by ford. *tr

we own a 2004 freestar that has had the transmission replaced in feb 2008 with less than 43,000 miles on it. in july 2008 we spend $450 on repairing part of the breaking system, and this week the van would not go into reverse and did not have any pull to it when it finally did after several attempts. once i got out of the parking space, i got an estimate of a block and onto a busy highway, only to have the van stall on me, almost causing a wreck. the dealership and ford paid for the transmission to be replaced, we paid for the caliper, drum, rotor, and break pad to be replaced on the front driver side brake. when having the van checked out this week, we were told yesterday that they did diagnostics on it, and the only thing that came back was a cam sensor and that there was probably moisture involved that would cause the stalling. nothing was repaired, and this could happen again, esp during the winter months, when winter driving is already dangerous. there is also an issue with the track control. it works most of the time but not all of the time. the light comes on at least 2 time per month. the reason can't be found for it. ford needs to be made to do recalls on these vans for the safety of the owners. *tr

Oklahoma City, OK

on jan 8, 2009, i had traveled approximately 1050 miles from oklahoma to ohio. while in ohio, 6 inches of snow had fallen, and the roads were slick with snow and ice. in preparing for my return trip on jan 11, the traction control and abs warning lights came on, and there was a significant change in control and braking in the vehicle. upon driving further, the transmission warning light came on, and the vehicle went into reverse with a huge "bang" sound and vibration. the vehicle's cvt transmission would not change gears in drive when the transmission light was illuminated. upon turning the vehicle off, and back on, all lights would go off, and come back on within 5 minutes. after the 6th restart, the check engine light came on as well. the transmission light, after a few restarts, did not come back on. however, the abs, traction control and check engine lights stayed on for approximately 650 miles. after that time, all lights went out, but the rpms went from 2000 to 3500 on their own while the vehicle was in cruise control on a flat road. that corrected itself about 100 miles later. upon taking the vehicle to a dealer on my return, they told me that since no lights were on, and the vehicle was now acting normally, they could not duplicate the problem. my factory warranty expires in 14 days, and i am not sure if i'll be able to duplicate the problem to the dealer by that time. the service department blamed the malfunction on the cold weather and the snow, but the awd vehicle with traction control was, to my knowledge, manufactured to deal with snow and cold weather. one does not need awd, traction control or abs during dry, warm days. *tr

i purchased a 2008 ford expedition in dec 07. in oct 08 when my wife applied the brakes at approx 40 mph the traction control light came on, the abs took over, and the steering wheel began to shake violently and the vehicle was extremely hard for my wife to stop and she rolled past the stop sign and was almost hit by another vehicle. the vehicle was returned to the dealer for the repair. this has happened a total of four times, three times it has been to the dealer for the same problem. this has become an extreme safety problem for my wife since every time this has happened it is really hard for her to control and stop the vehicle. i have stated a case with ford customer care and the vehicle is currently at the dealer for the third time. ford said they would have to send an engineer to go over the vehicle because the ford mechanics are unable to fix the problem. so far none of the ford personnel seem to know why or what causes this and seem to think it is perfectly fine to use my family as their crash test dummies. *tr

brake pressure differential deactivation switch leaked brake fluid down wires to the abs module, shorting the module and causing a brief but non-sustained fire with resulting smoke and melting of abs module and wiring harness components. this disabled the speedometer, odometer, abs system, cruise control, and activated abs lights and brake system lights. appears to have occurred while driving and smoke and smell was present when parked in garage after occurrence. *tr
