Dodge Caliber 2007
Chrysler Llc
Safety incident date:
Mar 15, 2008
Location:
Napanoch, NY

i own a 2007 dodge caliber r/t witch i purchased new. after the first 4 months of owning this vehicle. i noticed that every bump i hit, the car would sway back and forth on the road and noticed the stability was not good at all, even though i have the stability system program feature. i proceeded to take it in to the dealer and have it looked at. they assured me that it was fine. i just needed tires. i replaced all 4 tires and still had the same problem. so i brought the car in again and they then replaced the sway bar links and struts. i still have the same problem so i brought it in again and the dealer said it was fine. it is not fine! it is very dangerous and hard to control on a road that is not perfectly paved especially in rainy weather and winter months this vehicle has very bad traction and could cause an accident if unable to control, which i am trying to prevent from happening. i have spoken to other dodge caliber owners and they seem to have the same problem. now i'm experiencing water running into my car every time i turn on the ac or heat and hot water running on my foot while driving whenever i turn a corner. i would greatly appreciate if this matter is investigated and resolved. thank you *tr

2003 dodge dakota, 2wd, 5 spd manual, v6. at speeds from 15 mph and up the brake system seems to fail as the truck jumps and skids very rapidly. the first time this happened i was on the freeway, traffic came to a halt quickly, i applied the brakes and almost lost control and hit the car in front of me as this jumping and skidding occured. all parts on the truck are factory and have not been modified. i am concerned and wondering if this has anything to do with the front suspension clunking. *tr

my 2008 dodge charger was wrecked in april. the abs light and esp (traction control) lights on the dash came on. the next thing i knew there was no brakes at low speeds. this had never happened before. i continued to my destination only a few miles away and planned to call a tow truck. as i tried to stop so i could get out to open a gate the car would not stop and i wrecked the car. there was nothing done to correct the failure. the car was totaled and nothing was ever done by dodge or chrysler to compensate for the problem. in fact i was told that the very moment the lights came on i should have stopped driving the vehicle and called the dealership. this would have been possible if i lived in a bigger city, but i live in the country with very little cell phone reception in some areas. *tw

within one year of purchasing the vehicle, engine cluster lights started coming on. air bag warning, abs, traction control, check engine and brake warning lights as well as the speedometer failing to work. we have had the vehicle in over 12 times in the past 5 years for this recurring problem. the vehicle is now out of warranty but the problem is still happening. i have been told by a non chrysler mechanic that the harness that goes to the abs module has a connector near the wheel well. the dealership has tried on many occasions to seal this connector. i understand later models have a corrected harness. the mechanic told me the connector was repaired previously by splicing the wires of the harness near the connector. this was not a factory authorized repair. the connector and the abs module are once again fried and melted. the vehicle has never had abs, traction control or air bags working for more than a month after each repair attempt. since the warranty expired on the vehicle, i have had it in one time for a repeated attempt to fix it. i had a battle trying to get the work done as a warranty issue. they charged me over $300 to trace the problem which it had been in for 11 times earlier. i am through trying to get this dealership to repair the problem. my wife is currently driving a car without abs, traction control or air bags. *tr

2009 dodge ram 1500. while driving through winter conditions it appears that snow and ice build up around the rear brake calipers. once that ice began to melt a large section of ice fell off. the ice had encapsulated the wheel speed sensor wire and the falling of the ice ripped the sensor wires from the connector. the result was instant loss of traction control, anti lock brake system, and cruise control. this allowed a condition that caused loss of control on ice. *tr

description: i was involved in an accident on 10 jan 2010 while driving my 2005 dodge caravan sxt. the accident was initially caused by an individual carrying furniture in the back of his pick-up truck. the furniture fell out of the back of the truck forced myself and another driver in front of me to slam on our brakes. i immediately applied my brakes however the abs did not engage and i skidded into the chevy silverado truck that was traveling in front of me. i left two 50ft skid marks (my estimate) behind me. ultimately, the failure of the abs system caused me to impact the rear of the silverado. additionally, and just as importantly, my air bags did not deploy upon impact. i was later informed by dodge/chrysler, who i complained to, that based on the area of impact the sensors were not damaged, which in-turn was the determining factor why they didn't deploy. after checking all the recalls for my van there was a recall for the airbag sensor that dodge failed to inform us of, in addition to other recalls.we took plenty of pictures at the scene of the accident to show all the problems i have stated in the complaint, dodge model: caravan model year: 2005 manufacturer: daimlerchrysler corporation mfr's report date: may 01, 2007 nhtsa campaign id number: 07v192000 ea06003 nhtsa action number: ea06003 component: air bags:frontal:sensor/control module potential number of units affected: 270958 summary: make: dodge model: caravan model year: 2005 manufacturer: chrysler group llc mfr's report date: jan 07, 2010 nhtsa campaign id number: 10v008000 rq09003 nhtsa action number: rq09003 component: air bags:frontal:sensor/control module potential number of units affected: 312442make: dodge model: caravan model year: 2005 manufacturer: brake parts, inc. mfr's report date: mar 09, 2006 nhtsa campaign id number: 06e022000 n/a nhtsa action number: n/a component: service brakes, hydraulic. *tr

i have a 2002 dodge durango. it has rear antilock brakes. i have had numerous close calls in hard stop situations where the wheels lock up and the vehicle slides forward. i have taken it to a brake specialist who agreed after a test ride there was a serious problem but said i needed to get the dealer involved. i have taken it to several dodge dealers over a period of about four years. they have made several recommendations to which i had the service done and it made no difference. now they keep telling me there is nothing wrong. i got dodge regional involved last year. they told me to take it back to the dealer and have them check it out. the dealer said that the abs was engaging early but did nothing to correct the problem. i recently reached dodge regional again. he says he talked to the service manager at the dealership who told him they recommended the rotors be replaces and i refused. i told him that was a lie that i had the rotors and pads replaced. dodge regional said there was nothing he could do to help. he said the service manager recommended i bring the car in for inspection again at another $90. i told him i refuse to keep paying these fees to have them tell me there's nothing wrong. i then put in a call to the service manager at the dealer and left him a detailed message asking him to please return my call. he never returned my call. i have attempted to reach dodge regional for the last few days and his phone just rings with no voicemail picking up. i am out of ideas and patience. i love my vehicle but it is a severe hazard. it seems as though once again nothing will happen until someone is killed or seriously injured before anything gets done. i have plenty of documentation with my complaints to the dealers as backup. i hope someone there can help me get this problem resolved. by the way, i know another person who has the same year durango as me and she complains of the same problem. *tr

Dodge Ram 3500 2008

most owners of multiple model year dodge ram 2500/3500 4x4 pickups have or will encounter front cv driveshaft failures, u-joint failures or hanger bearing failures. this appears to be a very common problem that dodge is completely ignoring and not covering under warranty as the part failures typically occur shortly after the initial 36 month warranty is expired. this is a serious safety issue which can result in loss of steering control and even a crash. these verhicles are purchased and used as heavy duty hauling rigs and many have diesel engines allowing the carrying or pulling of large, heavy trailers. symptoms may start with a creaking in the front axle area and include steering wheel chop upon return to center, which is another safety issue. the repair is replacement of the parts that were installed at the factory which are of known poor quality. u-joints specifically should contain a zerk fitting which would allow regular lubrication at maintenance intervals, whereas the factory installed u-joints are sealed and not greasable, which forces them to wear significantly and quickly, thus allowing the parts to fail. every dodge dealer within 100-miles of my location is aware of the problem and states it is a common problem and not covered under the factory warranty. many of which agree that the factory installed original parts are of poor quality and the replacement parts available from the manufacturer are of the same quality, necessitating replacement of the parts with aftermarket parts of much higher quality. on my particular vehicle i have not yet replaced the parts due to dealer scheduling availability but will be in the near future.

my abs lights came on over the course of the last year 5 different times and went out without repair work. the lights finnally came on and would not go out. i replaced the abs controller without issue, however i am the curious type. i opened the controller box to examine (post mortem if you will) and found a classic case of non-lead solder tin whisker groth shorting out several points on the board. the links below are several pictures of the tin whiskers that are classic in non-lead solder. the links below the pics are some details on tin whisker info. http://i403.photobucket.com/albums/pp120/bigjim195944/dsc02608.jpg http://i403.photobucket.com/albums/pp120/bigjim195944/dsc02609.jpg http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xplore/login.jsp?url=http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/iel5/4147209/4141004/04147278.pdf%3fisnumber%3d4141004%26prod%3dcnf%26arnumber%3d4147278%26arst%3d398%26ared%3d403%26arauthor%3dsosiati%252c%2bh.%253b%2bkuwano%252c%2bn.%253b%2bhata%252c%2bs.%253b%2biwane%252c%2by.%253b%2bmorizono%252c%2by.%253b%2bohno%252c%2by.&authdecision=-203 http://mae.pennnet.com/articles/article_display.cfm?section=artcl&article_id=238657&version_num=2&p=32

vehicle: 2008 dodge grand caravan, in use for 20 months, 17000 miles. uneven brake pad wear. i believe this is a significant safety problem rather than a routine maintenance issue is based on what could have happened and what did happen. here are my observations and experiences (1) if the malfunctioning rear wheel brake calipers are unexpectedly locking up the wheel the operation of the antilock brake system (abs) and electronic stability program (esp) safety systems will be compromised since the control computers cannot fully unlock the rear wheels on slippery roads; (2) the rotational drag from locking rear wheels caused the vehicle to exhibit very poor starting traction and control on snow and a strong propensity to get stuck especially if the rear wheels were on a less slippery surface than the front wheels, it was not possible to ┐rock┐ or push the vehicle free, turning off the esp as recommended in the operators manual for stuck situations did not help to free the vehicle; (3) the dragging rotor could overheat, reduce braking performance and cause unanticipated damage to brake system components, my rear brake components show signs of what looks to me to be excessive heating; (4) the failure occurred about 5 months and 5000 miles after factory service inspected the brake system and did not find any problems or excessive wear, this is well under chrysler┐s 12 month or 12,000 mile inspection interval recommendation for brakes, this is also under my more stringent 6 month tire rotation and brake inspection interval; (5) none of the onboard diagnostics for the abs or esp indicated a problem with the systems, no audible warning chirping devices sounded, the grinding noise of the irreparably damaged rotor and caliper on the left rear wheel was the first indication of brake system failure. i am trying to get chrysler to inspect and repair this safety defect under warranty outside of the standard 12 month 12000 mile brake warranty. *tr

i purchased a 2008 dodge avenger about a year ago, a few days after i got the car the gear shift got stuck and i couldn't get the car out of park. i called the dealership and the sales guy who sold me my car told me that i was probably doing something wrong, about an 15mins later the car went in to drive, and i didn't think anything about it. today i tried to up my car in drive and it wouldn't going in to drive at all. i called the dealership and they told me that i had to go through dodge because i was out of the 30days. i then called the dodge dealership and he told me i would have to pay about $1300 to get my car fixed. *tr

on 6/27/2010 my family and myself were traveling to hackensack mn on hwy 371 and when i attempted to pass a slow moving vehicle my mini van kept increasing in speed. no injuries happened i calmly got it to stop but i had to pull off to the side of the road and shut off the engine. the cruise was on but not activated. i tried to hit the cancel switch hit the on off switch all the time pushing the brake pedal. the skid protection light and brake light came on and the brakes heated up really bad but i was able to stop. the engine would not stop racing and the lights would not go out until i shut down the engine on the side of the road. we then continued our trip with no more incidents and i did try to get it to happen again with no luck. *tr

i purchased a new 2010 dodge 1500 ram pickup three weeks ago. since that time intermediate the lights for the antilock brakes and traction control come on and off while driving down the road as well as several other electrical components not working or working off and on. i contacted the dealer and they informed me that i should pop the hood because the main electrical block under the hood on some have had not properly connected plugs on the back and they may vibrate loose and i should wiggle them around and see if that fixes the problem. i will take the truck in for them to try and repair but it appears to me that if the connector is loose on these that the power interruption to the circuit will make the abs and traction control systems inoperable for the period of time the lights are illuminated and could cause accidents if this occurs at the wrong time. i have pics and video of the issues. there is also to give a bigger scope of the blocks looseness no heated seat except driver no cooled seat except driver all 4 positions are supposed to be heated and cooled. the radio works off and on, the power pedals don't work at all. there is as a unrelated note an intermittent knock in the lower part of the engine. *tr

i've been experiencing failures with the steering angle sensor (code c121a) intermittently for over a month. in doing research with other owners of the lx series vehicles (charger, magnum, 300) and jeep vehicles equipped with the sensor it seems that this part commonly fails, often for an undetermined reason. explanations vary between chafing and friction causing plastic chips to obscure the electro-optical sensor, to chafing or bad wiring harnesses. the inability of this sensor to initialize results in a lack of electronic stability control which could contribute to a crash. this problem is well documented and discussed on multiple online vehicle forums such as 300cforums.com, jeepsunlimited.com, lxforums.com, jk-forum.com, dodgeforum.com and a litany of other websites. some even have threads discussing the possibility of recalls and service advisors telling customers it is a "common" problem, however daimler-chrysler has not seen fit to take any corrective action or issue a recall, nor are there any tsbs that i could locate. *tr
