we own a 2000 dodge durango. we experienced vibration in the front and strange noises. mechanic checked front end of vehicle. said that front right upper ball joint was defective to the point where it was unsafe to operate. he showed us the abnormal "play" in the front and said the wheel could easily separate from the chassis. he replaced this ball joint, but warned that the other three (consisting of lower and upper ball joints on left side, and lower ball joint on right side) are also bad and will need replacing in the very near future. also said the universal joints in the rear will need to be replaced in the near future. this is all after we spent more than $200 to replace rear wheel axle bearings. *ak

for over a year, we kept hearing a metal on metal thunking noise. no one has been able to diagnose it. two days ago, when returning home, we heard a loud metallic thunking noise that was much worse than previously heard. it sounded like we were dragging a tail pipe or muffler. yet, we found nothing under the car. when we got home, we jacked up the car to see if we would find the source of the noise. the dodge spirit is a front wheel drive vehicle that uses a solid rear axle assembly that consists of a metal "v" shaped channel crossmember with a torque tube that runs through the middle of it. the torque tube is rigidly welded to end plates and is an integral part of the axle assembly and cannot be individually replaced. we discovered that the torque tube had broken the weld at the end plate as well as snapping completely in half about 6" from the end plate. the noise we heard was this tube slapping up and down in the "v" channel crossmember. it became very apparent that this was a dangerous situation and the car should not be driven. we immediately contacted the dodge dealer as well as customer service for dodge. customer service was no help as there is no recall for this item. the dodge dealer wasn't much help either. they examined the car and determined that the rear axle assembly needed replacing (obviously) and would cost nearly $800 for the part. we live in arizona where the environment is dry and non-corrosive. there is no rust on this car, nor are there signs of abuse or damage. the weld failed on this major component. the rear axle assembly should last the lifetime of the car! so, now, we have an ugly car (paint failed-separate complaint filed) with a slipping transmission (complaint filed) that is sitting lame in the driveway. this is horrible for a 9-year-old car that has received all maintenance and service regularly, including wheel rotations. *la

2003 dodge ram 3500. 76000 mile. rear axle seal leaking onto right rear emergency brake pads. loss of rear end fluid. had the transmission and rear end serviced at local dodge dealer at 30,000 and 60,000 miles. they stated both times the rear end was low on fluid. but could not figure out where the fluid went to. during a recent brake pad replacement the technician removed the right rear wheel to turn the disk, and found the problem. the local dealer stated they had the seals but when they arrived they were the wrong size. several phone calls later the technician was able to located the correct size but they could not be delivered until the next day. also there has been a clicking noise comming from the right front of the truck for some time. i assumed it was the shock. but again the technician doing the brake job found the upper a arm ball joint was warn to the point of allowing side to side movement of the tire. the left (or drivers side seemed to be good.) but since my truck would be down again i have decided to replace both a arm ball joints. my business depends on me being able to travel 200 or 300 miles a day, so maintenance is a must. but it seems a whole bunch of stuff is going wrong just after my warranty expires.*ak

i recently bought a 2004 dodge durango slt with the hemi engine. when i accelerate or come to stops, there will be a "popping" noise coming from somewhere in the rear suspension. this occurs daily without fail. also, when travelling over roadways, at normal speed, there is excessive bounce of the vehicle from the rear along with this popping noise/sensation. i will be bringing the vehicle into the dealer today for this repair. i'm not sure if this problem is associated with three other nhtsa technical service bulletins involving the power train: axle assembly, the stabilizer bar bushing squawk, or the exhaust drone. *ak
