i was behind a panel van at a traffic light and started to move forward at about 2mph. i heard a loud snapping sound and rattling noise. applied the brakes, put the car into park and released the brakes but the car started to move backwards. i set the parking brake and got out to see what was wrong. under the driver's side was a large puddle of transmission fluid and the transmission was leaking badly. i towed the car back to my driveway and checked the transmission case. i found a crack in the differential area. i contacted an aamco transmission specialist and was told that this was a very common problem with this model transmission used on 3.8l engines and most of their business was replacing/repairing these transmissions. the specialist had to replace the case and internal parts which cost me $1000.00. i was given the failed parts was told what happens with this transmission, warning me never to spin the tires--if i get stuck in the snow, call a tow truck. if the tire(s) spin, the spider gears spin rapidly on the spider axle and overheat. one or both of the gears weld themselves to their axle and snap the retaining pin. over a period of time, the spider axle works its way out of the yoke and strikes the inside of the case breaking the case. this time, a piece of the spider axle broke off and entered the torque converter area through another hole it created damaging the crankshaft position sensor. this is a safety issue since, without the spider gear assembly, there is no parking gear. if the car is parked on an incline, the spider axle drops out and the driver leaves the car without noticing the car is in motion, the car can roll uncontrollably. this is terrible engineering and a safety concern. an investigation should be launched with possible recalls/reimbursements for repairs made. there is also a flaw in the main shaft from the troque converter that causes transmission failure--a weak weld joining thin metal parts can fail without notice. *a

the differential pin, bearing pin for the center spider gears cracked more toward one end or closer to an end vs. at the center, the now two piece pin protrudes from the differential cage and wears through the case on the bell housing side ,and a transmission fluid leak appears that is extremely similar to a front seal or front pump leak. once the hole is present the differential pin segments strike the edge of the opening and wear the hole large enough for the longer of the two segments to protrude and stop the entire drive line, engine, transmission and front wheels and axles instantainiously. this failure occurred at 25 mph, and was like hitting a brick wall. the transmission is a 41te. the dealership representative stated completely off the record that they have seen a large influx of this failure in these vehicles with the 41te with mileage averaging 65000, as little as 15000, and as many as 100000. if we were at highway speed when the pin let loose and locked the drive line, the vehicle would have been uncontrolable due to the locked front wheels. chrysler has changed the designation of the a604 to the 41te in a cheap attempt to separate litigious action in progress by older van owners, from the owners, of the newer or latest body style. the 41te is the same design deficient transmission as the a604 with at different designation (ultradrive automatic). having purchased replacement transmissions for two of the three chrysler minivans we have owned, and having listened to innumerable persons i've met that own or have owned a chrylser/plymouth/dodge minivan tell of replacing their transmission, it's more than time for the federal government to protect the public from this lecherous and unsafe company. the failure of the differential pin is more than a nuisance repair, it is a hazard that will kill. chrysler needs to be taken to task to recall, redesign, retrofit and repair the fleet now, before someone is needlessly killed.*ak

without any warning my transmission failed at 58,587 miles. it was serviced once at about 30,000 miles and the fluid checked regularly.the failure was not my fault. after having it towed to the local chrsyler dealer & waiting 3 days the problem was finally diagnosed as the rear planetary gears had welded themselves together, otherwise total transmission failure. the service manger agreed with me that this was an usual situation. i was offered no help or recourse. i had to replace the transmission at full cost. i am very angry that i have had to put out $2000 for a problem that was not my fault. it is a documented fact that chrysler has had an ongoing problem with their power trains. before purchasing my van i was lead to believe that this problem was a thing of the past. if chrysler knows they still have a problem that should issue a disclaimer up front when you purchase their vehicles or at least offer a higher warranty on the power trains. is there a class action suit i can get in on or start one? i had expected chrysler to offer to pay for the entire bill or at least the cost of the tranmission. this is a major problem that needs to be fixed. if this had happened while driving at interstate speeds there could have well been a major fatality with loss of lives. if you can not offer me any help at least steer me in the right direction. i am prepared to pursue this matter until chrsyler resolves it.*ak

when we tried to back the vehicle out of our garage, we discovered that it would not engage reverse gear. we pushed the vehicle out of the garage to the street and found that it still had all forward gears. we took the vehicle to tuttle-click chrysler in irvine. we were told that a differential gear had failed. it seems to us that this would prevent the vehicle from moving in either direction, so a broken differential gear probably was not the reason we couldn't use reverse gear. however, we still needed reverse, so the dealer replaced the transmission. within the two weeks preceding the transmission failure, the windshield wipers began to operate spontaneously and the ignition lock became very difficult to operate. during the same visit that the transmission was replaced, the dealer replaced the body control module, a computer within the vehicle, to fix the wiper problem and replaced and rekeyed the ignition lock. we believe that all three of these failures were the result of faulty design or shoddy workmanship and asked chrysler to reimburse us and to explain why the components failed. chrysler has done neither. we believe that we should not be required to indemnify chrysler for its mistakes. *ak

differential unit blewout while driving putting a hole in the transmission case the company wants me to pay 2/3 of the total to fix it, and i think the problem came from the rebuilt transmission they put in last year, my problem is the vehicle is 5 years old and to go thru two transmissions just dont make sense expecially at the owners expense. apparently there is a ploblem somewhere in the differential and the transmission for this to happen not only to be but other owners of the same vehicle for the same year they are telling me they wont know if it is there fault unless the open the area up to see what happen but i have to agree to pay for that to happen i dont think i should have to pay for there mistakes this is not the first time this has happen i owned a town@country before and had to put 2 transmissions in that thinking because they came oput with a new style and presumable a better vechicle i decided to give them another try. please help me in this or provide me with who can help me in this matter. thank you debra c jacob. *ak
