started vehicle in my driveway in front of garage, as i had my foot on brake, while placing transmission into drive, the brake pedal went completely down to floor, and the vehicle rolled backwards into garage door frame, causing minor damage to the aluminum flashing on the garage door frame. all attempts to pump brake pedal yielded no stopping effect. fortunately, this episode occurred in the driveway as my intended route included a steep hill ending at a "t" intersection. upon inspecting the vehicle, directly beneath the drivers door, there is a large puddle of brake fluid. upon further inspection, the fluid appears to be originating from a severely rusted brake line that sits above the frame leading into the abs controller. all the brake lines appear in the same severely rusted condition.

this is the second time the brake lines have failed on this vehicle and a report issued to nhtsa. this time, my son was driving and applied the brakes to stop at a stop sign. the brake pedal went to the floor. he went through the stop sign, crashed into a median that slowed him down, and ended up on top of the median. thank goodness the truck was empty and no one was using the right-of-way at the intersection. inspection showed yet another corroded brake line. this brake line was oem. the brake lines were replaced after the previous incident look fine and are not corroded. it appears that all of the brake lines need to be replaced to correct this safety defect. *tr the consumer stated he experienced hydraulic brake failure at 51,848 miles due to corroded brake lines. the lines burst in an area that was weakened by corrosion and failed under normal usage and brake line pressure. there was no indication that failure was eminent. the dealer replaced the rusted brake lines from the master cylinder. updated 04/03/13

i was driving from the boat launch to park my 2004 chevy silverado 2500hd when the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. i pumped the brakes as i slowly approached my parking spot, however, i could not get any pressure to build up in the system. with no action on the brake calipers, i used my parking brake to stop as i entered my parking spot. there was no warning or indicator light alerting me to any brake problems. after parking i noticed a leaking brake line under the driver's side near the abs brake module. i made a temporary repair, attempted to bleed and pump up the brakes which resulted in the rear brake line blowing out right at the hose connection. still no warning or indicator light came on to alert me to any problems with the brake system. i had the vehicle towed home and as we were taking my vehicle off the truck, the brake warning light finally came on and the electronic dash displayed the message "service brake system". the lack of fluid in the brake reservoir must have triggered the sensor there. upon closer inspection, i noticed that the brake line failed inside a plastic brake line retaining clip located on the outside of the frame just before it was routed over to the abs modulator valve under the vehicle on the driver's side on the inside of the frame. i replaced all the brake lines with pre-bent stainless steel lines from classictube.com. i am only glad that this happened in a parking lot and not while i was towing my boat, i do not believe i would have had enough wits about me to use the parking brake to stop my truck. i mentioned this problem to my local gm dealer who blamed it on the treatment of roads during the winter months. granted living in the "snow belt" one should expect corrosion but never complete brake failure without any warning. there are numerous complaints online, just search for silverado brake failure.

brake lining has premature rust, in which, caused it to leak and failed to stop vehicle. i was the fourth vehicle to pull up to a red light, when i noticed that i didn't have any brakes. the speed limit is 45 mph at this road location and i was trying to slow my acceleration to come to a stop. the brake went to the floor on my first attempt to slow down and come to a stop. i did not have time to stop my truck before hitting the smaller car in front of me! i swung my truck to the burm of the road and passed all the vehicles stopped at the red light, eventually going through the light by way of the burm of the road. my driver side mirror was broken in this incident. the brakes did slow me down and allow me to come to a stop with the use of my emergency brake but, it was after my vehicle passed all the cars stopped at the red light and me stopping in the middle of the intersection. lucky there was no cars in the way! the brakes had some stopping power but, were not enough for this size truck and the pedal did not engage till it was just about to the floor. *js broken lining has been replaced by inspection mechanic but, stated he will not inspect this vehicle until all the lines are replaced. he has stated that all the lines have premature rust and could break at any time and will not take the responsiblilty to say they are okay to pass inspection. i also, had to replace all 4 factory brake rotors at 14,752 miles. the brake pads wore out prematurely and when i had my mechanic replace them, i was told that the rotors were rusted and pitted prematurely. i still have them, i can't beleive how bad they deterorated! i was surprised with such little mileage that the rotors and brakes went bad.

the brakes failed without warning, i.e., were operating perfectly fine up until the failure and no warning light came on. had truck towed to our dealership; all brake lines were replaced at a cost of almost $1500. regular maintenance performed on truck throughout its life by the same dealership. gm refuses to cover cost. have another chevrolet silverado 2500hd, a 2004, and will need to have dealership check the brake lines on that truck and possibly replace the lines, for additional cost. could have been killed; could have killed others. never received any communication from gm, chevrolet or the dealership about making sure that i have the brake lines replaced or inspected. i am in a "salt belt" state. *tr

driving down highway, applied brakes to feel the pedal go to floor. able to stop and inspect after some distance. rear steel brake line under truck bed had corroded through, and with a push of the pedal, brake fluid sprayed everywhere. had to have line replaced from diverter box under cab to rear crossover at driver rear wheel, badly corroded! now it is march of 2012 (107,000 miles), and the front lines from the master cylinder to diverter are leaking as well. thankfully i noticed before driving. i am having the bad line replaced, and i am looking for a stainless steel replacement for all lines! *tr

i filed a complaint in 2009 with the nhtsa and have yet to hear anything from the agency regarding this problem. in the same year as the complaint, i had my local chevrolet dealer's service department replace a section of brake line by the abs module that had failed due to extreme corrosion. this past week i returned to the same dealer to have them repair another section that had also failed. i was told that, due to possible litigation they would not repair the line as they had in the past, but would replace the entirety of the line for an estimate of $1200.00. the service manager also stated that figure could go higher as more was discovered. i can't see putting this kind of money into this vehicle knowing that more failures are sure to follow even though the truck has only 95,000 miles on it now. gm knows there is a problem. they could care less and the customer is going to foot the bill for their malfeasance as usual. *kb

i am experiencing issues of serious rot and rust with components of my truck. first failure was that my power steering pump reservoir rotted through and caused a leak of fluid, had to replace unit. then transmission line rotted through, causing a leak of fluids, had to replace lines and cooler due to corrosion. then starter failed, seriously corroded. had to replace. afterward, alternator froze up, inside was corroded with rust and would not spin freely, had to replace. most recently, brake lines burst causing complete loss of braking ability. will need to replace. i have owned a substantial number of vehicles over the years and this is completely unusual in my experience and has caused a situation that could lead to death or serious injury. i was fortunate to escape both. furthermore, it has been a serious financial burden and inconvenience to have to replace so many components on a truck that has yet to reach 60,000 miles. i bought this truck new and have taken very good care of it in hopes that my 30,000 investment would last me a good number of years with regular and expected maintenance. *tr

i was traveling down a steep hill on dry pavement and my vehicle was picking up speed so i applied the brakes and the pedal went straight to the floor. i started frantically pumping the brakes as i noticed the crossing guard going down on the train tracks at the bottom of the hill and still no brakes at all...after realizing i was completely without any brake pedal i immediately downshifted to 1st gear which slowed the vehicle down and i remembered the emergency brake and i then jammed the emergency brake pedal to the floor which stopped me 20 ft from hitting the side of a cargo train...as a guy who repairs mechanical systems for a living i was totally floored that the brake system could fail totally,.... i then took my truck to my mechanic who said the brake lines were totally rusted out and that both front brake lines had blown large holes between the master cylinder and the abs module and he told me i was lucky that my truck was not running very long before blowing the line as it could have started a fire as the brake fluid was spraying directly on the exhaust manifold...he recommended changing every brake line on my truck as all were severely rusted out and that it will happen again...he also informed me that i should check if there was a brake recall on this vehicle as he said this excess corrosion was a common problem on my model and year truck and he read last year that they were investigating it as severe safety hazard of multiple brake lines failing at once...my comment on this after reading many online complaints is that someone is not doing their job and they might want to warn people before someone dies... *tr

on feb..9 2012 i was in a drive thru automated car wash, when driving out i went to step on brake & the pedal went to the floor. i pulled over to the side lifted the hood & checked the master cylinder & saw that it needed fluid, i went into the convenience store & bought a pint of brake fluid, i filled the master cylinder, it took the whole bottle of fluid, i walked to the side of the truck to test the brake pedal & noticed the fluid leaked right out on the ground without stepping on the brake pedal. i had the truck towed to my repair shop, when put on lift the mechanic pointed out the rotted out brake line by the modular valve plus the other three lines were rotted & were unsafe, for a temporary fix i had the one line fixed by replacing a piece of the broken line. it was brought to my attention about the ongoing investigation with nhtsa. i purchased the truck in nov. 2003. *tr

2003 chevy 2500hd truck brake pedal went to the floor when leaving garage.....under vehicle found brake fluid puddle....upon inspection found severely rusted brake line was leaking.....year prior had same issue with a different line, so changed out line. even changed a rusted line that wasn't leaking....when filled reservoir with fluid and pressed pedal, brake line going to rear of truck in an obscured, above the gas tank location, started to leak....once again .....severely rusted brake line, in an area free from any road debris....so alas, after dropping the gas tank and replacing this line, which meant every line has been replaced......no leaks!!! what is going on with these lines.....i baby this truck and it is in the garage 95% of the time always clean...this should never have happened!!!! after being a chevy man all my life.......i'm done.... drive shaft, fuel tank guard, and fuel lines and filter all rusted.....from what????? *tr
