safety concern- potential trailering accident!!! it appears that chevrolet/gm has changed the wiring in their vehicles so that electric trailer brake controllers no longer illuminate the trailer brake lights when the electric brake controller is operated independently from the vehicle brakes. all brake lights work fine when the foot brake is applied but no brake lights illuminate when the controller overide is applied to operate the trailer brakes independently. there are times when trailering that one only wishes to use the trailer brakes to settle down swaying or on long down hill grades. 2012 vehicles are not wired so that brake lights also work off the controller override switch. i have been towing for over 26 years and brake lights have always worked both on the foot brake and controller override brake switch. this is a potential accident waiting to happen. if one applies the trailer brakes alone with no brake lights illuminating, this could cause another vehicle to slam into the back of the trailer and tow vehicle causing a crash. chevrolet states they cannot connect the trailer controllers to operate the brake lights as it would back feed power into the electronics of the vehicle voiding any warranty on the vehicle. trailer brakes lights only work as connected to the vehicle wiring when stepping on the foot brake. *kb

i filed a complaint with you in approximately 2008/09. at 20 mph there are almost no brakes (not abs brakes, no brakes). i pulled the fuse for the anti-lock system and the problem ended. i heard nothing back from you. friends who drove my truck complained of excessively soft brakes since it was new. i was checking your website 3 days ago when i came across recall #gm05068, nhtsa 05v379000. i called my local dealer to inquire about recall repairs. they informed me that the recall had been done on my vehicle on 02-17-06. they said they are only authorized to do the recall repairs once. i assume this was done when i had the vehicle in for other issues, as i had no brake problems at the time. so approximately 2 yrs after the recall service was done the problem presented itself. i called gm today (ref # 71-106-286-2771) they said they can't do anything on the recall but it is "possible" they may be able to give some assistance under another program if i take it to the dealer and pay for a diagnosis "of a manufacturer's defect". i was already told by the dealer that the fix would cost between $200-350.00, and diagnosis is likely to add another 100.00, with no assurance of any reimbursement. my problem is three fold: the original fix did not eliminate the problem, the problem is a design which directly impacts safety and appears to re-occur randomly every couple of years, a real fix must have been achieved since trucks after 2002 are not similarly affected. for my wife's safety i have chosen to pull the fuse and disable the abs system, returning the vehicle to pre-abs status, and the brakes work fine. the calipers and rotors have been regularly maintained. shouldn't an abs system to be designed to fail back to regular brakes rather than almost no brakes? questions: should the problem still be covered by the recall? what redesign was made to eliminate the problem? *js

while turning left into a parking space, the brake peddle was hard and would not go down. after pumping the brakes, the peddle went down and the truck stopped. this has happened several times. each time, while turning left and going slower than 10 mph. i have found that this is a common problem with this vehicle and there is a recall for "salt belt" states. tennessee is not considered one, even though the roads are salted several times per winter season. *tr

my abs fault light is coming on and the brakes are grinding as though i am sliding across an icy road. i just put on new brake pads at a dealership in march and no one mentioned that i had a problem. from what i heard the problem can be pulling the abs plug or spending thousands at a dishonest dealership. it is very dangerous and i have read on forums that this abs fault issue is a wide spread serious one. i love my truck and it has lot of mileage but this was going to be a problem on my chevy colorado no matter what so it seems to me this should have been a recall. *tr

the brakes went out - not totally out i but had to push the breaks all the way to the floor to get the car to slowly stop. i had very little stopping power. shortly thereafter (3- 4 minutes later ) the instrument break warning light came on. had i been going any faster i would have surely been in a serious accident. the car was towed to a chevrolet dealer. they discovered a leaking break line. they indicated that it was a result of excesssive rust in the break line. the warning light should have come on much sooner and the break line should not have rusted through. $3,000 later, it was fixed. *js

i started the vehicle, depressed the brake pedal(normal) to shift into a forward gear, subsequently applied the brake pedal, but this time the pedal traveled all the way to the floor. brake efficiency was drastically reduced, but did stop the vehicle after several feet, albeit from a very slow speed. subsequent inspection revealed that all brake lines leading into the abs module, located on the left underside of the vehicle just aft of the driver's door, were severally corroded; one of the lines leading to the module was ruptured. when the brake pedal was depressed, brake fluid streamed from the ruptured line. *js

as i was driving down the road, i signaled for a left turn. when i signaled the turn, there was a buzzing noise in the steering column and the engine turned off, resulting in a complete loss of power to steering and brakes. luckily, i was going about 10 mph and was able to stop the car, albeit in the middle of the street. i noticed the dashboard lights were on. the car restarted immediately and i drove it 1/2 block to a parking space. i subsequently took the car to fh dailey, the local chevy dealer. they told me there was a problem with the bcm (body control module) that had caused the engine to shut off while the car was being driven. they are replacing the bcm. they did not seem particularly concerned about the problem and my impression is it is not unusual for them to encounter it. i am concerned that, had i been driving in traffic, on the highway, or on a curving road, the engine failure could have resulted in significant injury or fatality to myself or others.

while driving my 1999 chevrolet silverado on friday, may 10, 2012, at approximately 15 mph, i attempted to stop at a stop sign. the brake pedal went to the floor and i needed the emergency brake to come to a complete stop and return to my residence (fortunately only approximately 1/2 mile away). i was able to get an appointment to have the truck examined at classic chevrolet (approximately one mile away in bellevue, pa) on may 15, 2012. i was then informed all the brake lines needed replaced due to corrosion along with the two front calipers. total cost to me was $1,228.00!
