i feel there is a design flaw in the electrical front seats in the b5 chassis a4/s4 (1996-2001 a4 and 2000-2002 s4). i owned a 1998 audi a4 and currently own a 2001 audi s4. both have been plagued with a front seat that rocks back and forth under acceleration and braking, the extent of which worsened dramatically over time. the problem was never fixed on my a4 with the audi dealers i consulted telling me that the movement was "within" specs. is it within spec to rock almost an inch? it seems like a serious safety concern since the greatest stresses would be during some kind of emergency braking manuever. eventually my s4 had the seat-frame replaced as the movement got to where it apparently was "out of spec". i asked for what the guideline was and was not provided with a quantitative answer. i know many others with this same issue that have not had any satisfactory resolution, and i have little confidence that the issue will not rear it's head with my "fixed" seat, probably within the next year or two. this has not been an issue with other cars i have been in made my honda, bmw, mercedes and more so the "all seats do this" argument presented by audi does not seem to hold much water. if the seat bracket and frame are wearing out of the manufacturer's tolerances within months of ownership, it seems like a faulty design which creates a possible and probable safety hazard for many people on the road. i urge you to work with audi to improve their seat/design/parts for existing owners before any serious injuries to owners or passengers occur. thank you. - andrew chang. *ak

my 2003 audi quattro 3.0 heated seat caught on fire. fortunately no one was injured and i was able to put out the fire before it spread. a hole was burned in the seat which audi replaced. i was lucky that i noticed the fire before i left my car in my garage or else the car and house could have caught on fire. this is a potentially dangerous problem that should be looked into. the audi dealer told me that others have had this problem in their all road model..it is just a matter of time before someone is severely injured from this type of defect.*jb

my 1999 audi a6 has seat heaters. when using the driver's seat heater, the steering wheel also heats up for a few minutes at the start of the heating cycle. recently, upon starting the vehicle where the seat heater had been left on setting 2 of 6, i noticed a small hole being burned through the steering wheel cover. i immediately turned the seat heater off and the burning stopped. unfortunately, i cannot now use the seat heater and there is a hole in the steering wheel cover. *jb

i have a 2004 audi a6 quattro 3.0 l. this weekend my grown son was sitting in the back seat and had his suit in a garment bag next to him. the heated seats were both on in the back. they smelled something burning and it turned out it was the heated seat. it burned the garment bag right into his suit and ruined the suit jacket as well. my seat looks like it was ready to catch on fire. i have 44,000 miles on this car. i have not contacted audi yet, and my fear is that when i do they will make me pay for this. i feel this is a major safety hazard and now i have to worry about the rest of the seats as well. i can't imagine what would have happened if a person would have been sitting there! *tr
