operation of this a4 configuration at speeds lower than 8 m.p.h. requires either that the operator lug the engine (i.e., run at less than the recommended 1500 r.p.m. in first gear) or not close the clutch completely. this design defect has lead to excessive clutch wear, requiring two replacements in less than 52,000 miles and two incidents of clutch overheating, with smoke. a potential fire hazard exists if the vehicle is operated at less than 4 m.p.h. for an extended period (e.g., more than 30 minutes) as may be expected in certain metropolitan traffic jams. the clutch design is also unsuitable for dynamic braking, showing excessive wear, thereby contributing to premature failure and the fire hazard. the a4 is otherwise a very fine automobile. the manufacturer should correct this design defect asap through provision of a low gear, six-speed option, adjustment of ratios or similar remedy. *ak

experienced a grinding noise and vibration in the transmission while accelerating onto highway from a stop, shifting from 1st to 2nd gear at approx. 4500 rpm. after this incident, the transmisison grinded when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear all the time above 3500 rpm. i contacted the dealer and had to wait a week for them to see my car. they kept the car for a day to "diagnose the problem." they told me that 2nd gear was "shot" due to "shifting at high rpms" or from "hard shifting" and that the transmission needed to be rebuilt. i said that this was ridiculous and that i wanted a new transmission. they said that audi would only authorize them to rebuild my unit. they also informed me that if this happened again, i would have to pay for the repairs myself and that i would no longer be covered under warranty. it disturbs me how a car manufacturer's transmission could not hold up to the power output of the engine and that the car should not be shifted "high" or "hard". when the repairs are completed, must i then baby this performance automobile and fear shifting above 3500 rpm (half of the engine's redline rpm)? also, i cannot understand how my warranty will not cover a component if it breaks twice. to me, that sounds like a defect. i am now waiting for the dealer to contact me when the necessary parts arrive. *ak

i no longer own this car. audi has repurchased it. i am not submitting this so much as for myself, but for owners of front wheel drive audi tts and vws which use this transmission. i have approx. 70 cases of mostly identical failures from audi tt owners on an internet owners' forum(audi-tt.org). additionally, another forum (vwvortex.com) recently did a survey, and a similar number of owners reported the problem as well. the vws in question use the same front wheel drive tranny that is used in the audi tt. specifically, the problem is a periodic grinding of the 2nd gear synchronizers. if this inquiry should be directed to another agency rather than nhtsa, please forward it along. here is a partial list of tt owners with this problem: *ak

i have purchased a 2002 audi a6 2.7t from sunnyside in middleburg hts ohio. the car had a vibration felt in the steering wheel and floorboard with oem wheels and tires. went back and forth to this specific dealer with no results. other area dealer, fred baker was able to alleviate the problem, but i asked if purchasing new wheels and tires would fix my problem. i was told yes, as long as i get wheel and tires with manufacturer's specs. purchased new wheels and tires with the following specs: 5x112mm bolt pattern, wheel bore to fit hub bore of 57.1mm with hubcentric ring. the offset of the tire is 35mm (same as oem tire) and the vibration became worse. this is at highway speeds. dealer tech manager did not even inspect the vehicle, even under warranty, just blamed the wheels and tires. contacted the wheel seller, edgeracing in florida and was told they build wheels for audi and vw to specs and never had any problems before. dealer tech manager asked me how i want to problem fixed. manufacturer's manual does not say that i should not be upgrading my car's wheel to more than specs. my tire ratio and offset remained to manufacturer's specs, and i do not feel that my car is safe when driving on the highway. i do not have the monetary resources to inspect the car to see if it was ever involved into an accident and never reported to carfax. i have been driving for 12 years and i can differentiate between rough driving due to lower profile tires (pirelli pzero nero m/s 235/40/18) and steering wheel vibration and floor board vibration due to some mechanical problem that dealer will either not disclose or are trying to hide. they did drop the sales price from 26,995 to 23,250 when i purchased the car from them. the car is still under warranty and i have contacted the auto manufacturer in germany to inform them of the potential safety issue. please advise me how to handle this situation, i feel that the car has a mechanical problem that the dealer is trying to hide. *nm

audi a4 2003, the clutch failed at 30,000 miles, but audi refused to fix the problem until it was completely undrivable. i had to pay out of pocket because it was categorized as wear and tear, thus not covered by audi's least. the electrical system and the fuel pump also failed and needed to be replaced. the jack broke while changing a flat tire and i was told that this had happened to other audi owners, but still had to pay the damage to the plastic siding out of pocket. *jb
