while driving on local roads, engine lost power and stopped running suddenly. i was able to restart the car after a minute or so and continued my trip to work. car is an automatic and the engine just quit like a manual left in gear at a stop sign...a shudder then nothing. not sure if relevant, but i could only restart the car after completely turning it off and removing the key. *js

this car has been great to me. aside from a fuel pump going, just recently i was driving on the freeway and the car died. the epc light on the dash popped up and luckily i was able to coast to the side of the road. i attempted to start the car several times before calling aaa (15-20 min) while on the phone with aaa i attempted to start the car again and it fired right up. thinking it was just a one time issue i got back on the freeway where 10 mile or so later same the same thing happened. another 20 min of waiting before it cranked again at this point i was in a b ad area with my family and everyone was getting nervous. after it started the epc light stayed on this time and i experienced loss of power and the car coughed and stumbled terribly when i needed it most. i managed to make it home and let the car sit for a day. hoped in and it cranked right up. no problems 15 miles later it happened again. after talking with other valued audi owners and looking over the audi owner forums. i have found this to be a quite common problem with the audi across the range of there a series from 1997-2011. please help! *tr

i purchased an audi because i thought i was buying quality. i have a broken hing on my glove box that rarely is used (est $450), oil leak from a cam shaft chain adjuster seal (est $517), broken trunk bin (est $675), and now a radio that doesn't work and audi wants ($1,900) so i can get radio reception. i am shocked these items have already worn out on a car that has only 50,500 miles and is only used for pleasure. *tt

i have obtained this car as a used car. engine oil was changed one week after i have the car at a mechanic shop. three weeks (about 500miles driving) later, a low engine oil alarm sounded. i brought the car back to the same mechanic shop and add a quart of oil to the engine. a couple weeks later, i was driving the car to a road trip. the low oil alarm sounded again. this was in the middle of my road trip when i was driving in the highway (about 500miles since last oil addition) at about 75mph. i have to get off the high way right away and went to a local mechanic shop to top off the oil. i was told by a mechanic that this is dangerous because if i couldn?t find a mechanic shop in time to add more engine oil, the engine would have been overheated, locked, and forced to stop right away. under this scenario, a serious collision with the cars behind or next to me might be caused if driving on the highway. upon research, it was discovered that this abnormal amount of engine oil consumption has been a common problem/complaint in this model of car due to the defects in the piston rings. in most cases, the piston rings were replaced under the manufacturer warranty. my car is just out of warranty with 57k miles on it. the dealer should be responsible fixing this problem as it is a serious safety problem and it was defected from the manufacturer. *tr

problem: premature wear of the cam and cam follower resulting in p0087 errors. this causes the car to run very erratic, surging and bucking and a general loss of power. there is an audi tsb (technical service bulletin) on this very issue for my 2005, 2006 and 2007. this is a very wide spread problem! my 2008 audi should be covered. --- at around 60k miles the car started experiencing the dreaded premature wear of the cam lobe follower and the high pressure fuel pump lobe. the follower was replaced but the cam was not. the car was then taken to my audi mechanic and i was told this is a widespread problem and that audi had extended the warranty on the high pressure pump, cam follower and the cam to 120,000 miles and mine would be covered. when i took it to the audi dealer they did everything that had a recall and told me to try it. the problem quickly returned and i had my mechanic remove the high pressure pump and we looked at the wear on the follower and cam. the cam as well as the follower were extremely worn. i do have pictures from then and now that the cam and follower have been replaced, i have the old parts as well. next took it back to audi dealership expecting to have this issue resolved and was told my vin was outside the extended warranty program and was not covered. they then told me i needed a cam and follower and i was given an estimate. i would audi to reimbruse me for the work i had performed. *tt

entering my garage, about halfway in the car suddenly accelerated forward; i had my foot on the brake while entering and immediately pushed down hard, the car skidded and stopped; i immediately put the car in neutral and the engine revved up to between 4000 and 5000 rpms, and then quickly dropped back to normal idle. just before reaching the house and the garage incident, the car momentarily speeded up and then came back to normal speed. i was going about 15 mph and it all happened so suddenly i didn't realize what had happened. it wasn't until the garage incident that i realized what had happened out on the street. *tr

the audi was stopped at a stop light when the rpm meter started to drop revs suddenly. once the car was in motion the engine felt rough. the car was driven 3 miles with no further incidence and was parked for the night. the next day when the car was started in the morning the check engine light came on and the engine started to get very sluggish and shuddering. the car was immediately stopped and the diagnostic codes were pulled. the codes showed multiple cylinder misfires with specific misfires in cylinder 2 and three. the car was towed to an audi dealer where this was confirmed. the dealership mentioned that there was a voluntary recall for exactly this issue. this is a safety issue. *tr

this is a tdi version of the q7. the high pressure fuel pump failed during normal use and sent metal parts through the fuel lines, through the fuel filter and into the combustion chambers. as a result, the engine ceased and we were left stranded in the middle of the road on a winding canyon road. the engine block was damaged; the crank shaft bent, the pistons damaged the heads and many other parts were destroyed. the car was repaired by an audi dealer and required all new fuel components (bumper to bumper) and a new engine. the car was in the shop for over a month. *tr

this complaint relates to a tdi version of the audi a3. while driving my kids to school, the car stopped dead and would not restart. on inspection by an audi dealer it was determined that the high pressure fuel pump had failed. the pump failure caused metal particles from the pump itself to circulate in the fuel system doing catastrophic damage to the fuel system and power train. as of this date, the car has been in the shop for repair longer than two weeks with no estimated date of completion. we experienced a similar catastrophic fuel pump failure with our audi q7 tdi in june of 2012 which required a new engine, fuel system and other parts (see odi # 10480946). according to the dealer, the reason for the delay in repairing the a3 relates to the large number of cars with similar fuel system failures which has caused a scarcity of parts. we have been told by the dealer that this same problem is happening to tdi vehicles from both volkswagen and audi. i am no engineer, but widespread fuel system failures seem potentially dangerous to drivers and their passengers. this problem deserves an investigation. *tr

my 2006 audi a4 just died on the road the day after i did the 95k services.. couldn't start up the car after many attempts and finally when i could, it was very loud and shaky.. got some smells from the front also but i couldn't figure out what was wrong. i sent it back to the dealer right away and going through some diagnosis, we need to replace the engine because the crankshaft inside the engine's got broken sleeves. prior to this, there were recalls on my car, my service light was on for a while and it was linked to the recall, they replaced the breather, but did not have to replace the turbo pipe.. when my car died on the road, i was lucky that just turning out from dunkin donuts for an very early morning coffee (5am), because it was so early, there weren't many cars, otherwise there would very likely be a crash. *tr

the car suddenly stopped not letting me start the engine or move the car again after two minutes. it was something very dangerous but i was lucky that no other car was behind us at that moment. when we had the chance to switch the car on again, there was an alert symbol shown telling us to drive carefully at very slow speed and preferably to take it to the dealer for service. the dealer had the car few weeks where they changed something in the automatic gear system and its software. this car had previously an engine change more than a year ago for problems in the oil consumption. all this happen in costa rica (not usa). *tr

complete engine shutdown without any prior warning after driving approx. 4 hours on i-95 south. car started and ran normally for another 3 hours immediately after i pulled over and stopped. same thing happened the next day after same amount of driving time on i-75, car started without problem and i reached destination after another 15 minutes. readout of computer showed nothing. mechanic recommended to prophylactically replace cam sensor which i did. effect remains to be seen. recommendation: car manufacturers must be forced to take measures to prevent complete engine shutdown for any reason other than a direct engine failure. it is too dangerous and could lead to severe accidents if this happens in heavy traffic, especially in lanes with no shoulder! it is bad enough if an engine fails by itself. a brief internet search showed numerous reports of such incidents!!! *tr
