brakes have worn considerably over the last 10,000 miles. i purchased the vehicle 'certified pre-owned' in may, 2011. now, only a year and 10k miles later...the car has begun to shake violently, affecting driver's ability to steer during heavy braking. the onset was incredibly fast...from barely noticeable to violently shaking the car in about 300 city miles at most. looks like the pads will need to be replaced and the rotors smoothed, maybe replaced. based on the estimates i have found, this repair will cost approximately $175 + labor if the rotors do need to be replaced. the unfortunate part about all of this...i didn't even have time to get my pads changed before they began to wear on my rotor. the stock honda brakes appear to have worn out in the rear first, then the front. from what i can tell, the front brakes had to pick up the slack from the notoriously inadequate rear brakes, causing the fronts to wear considerably faster. *tr

i took my 2010 acura tsx in for periodic maintenance (a-1). i was advised by the service representative that my rear brakes were worn down to 3 milliters and would need replacement soon. i asked if there was a recall or class action suit on these brakes and was told that there was for hondas and acura tsx's up to 2009. apparently the actions taken by honda/acura are insufficient. acura wants over $300 to replace the pads and surface the rotors. apparently honda is offering discounts of $150 for the service under the terms of the class action suit, which doesn't cover my particular acura. however resurfacing the rotors cannot be done every 20,000 miles without needing early replacement of the rotors. who pays for that? i was going to wait to take the car in for service. i wonder how serious this would have been if the rear brakes had failed during the ensuing period? *tr

turned corner in large center city and hit a construction large pot hole and/or obstruction on the left rear. after completing turn onto a narrow one-way street acceleration increased, brakes did not work, engine could not be turned off, gears could not move. after going through two major intersections without accident i kept pulling on the emergency brake. the car slowly stopped and was then perfectly normal. could use the brakes, shift, etc. i parked overnight in a garage. had the car towed to dealer the next day (7/21/12), where it is still unresolved. dealer said car is ok, but is now being analyzed by acura corporate engineers. i had three other people who were in the car at the time, including my wife, who will not ever go into this car. the car was only 10 days after purchasing. *tr

i own a acura tl 2006 car, the driver side rear wheel's brake caliper has failed and it does not retract the break piston therefore the brakes always being applied. this is causing the wheels to be super heated and severe burning smell coming out of the car's rear area. having talked to the dealer, i was told this is a safety hazard but they will not fix it unless i pay $350. *tr

the front brakes on my 2008 acura rdx make a loud grinding noise when applied on a slight downgrade or when stopping slightly harder than normal. i experienced w/ original brakes, repeated visits to dealer heard & found nothing. at time of brake replacement, brakes were fine, noise started again about 15k miles into the new brakes. took to dealer on sat they again find nothing report pads/rotors normal. the dealership now states that acura is aware and has no fix for the problem. the brakes feel like they are grabbing onto the rotor. feel mushy, rubbing and slow to stop. the sound is similar to metal to metal grinding. had a loaner and brakes were 1000% more stable. *tr

acura tsx 2010 rear brakes are prematurely wearing. rear brakes down to 15% use left after only 25,000 miles. class action lawsuit existed but has expired. my car was not in the list of approved vins for the lawsuit, but my car is experiencing the same known issue. local non-acura repair shop says it is a known issue and is due to the calipers binding up. acura needs to replace the calipers and brakes at no cost. *tr

driving down steep "s" turn in mountains when battery cable disconnected and all of car's systems shut down. no brakes, no steering, no power. worst part was that doors locked and we could not unlock them nor the windows. extremely frightening. there was no cell phone service where we were. if not for forest ranger who came along, because of car being partly into one of the lanes of this two-lane road, we would have roasted to death. nobody else stopped in spite of "help" signs. there was no inside manual exit from car. ranger had to jiggle and hold battery connection until we could unlock car. we were just lucky we weren't either going faster or in area with no mountain to the side of us where we might have gone off cliff. we were on a dangerous curve and were scared to death someone would hit us from behind. rangers and one of us directed traffic until tow truck arrived 1-1/2 hrs later. the battery was only a couple months old. tow truck said wrong battery had been installed at time of change and that it "popped" the clamps that ensure connection and a charge on the battery. but losing a battery connection shouldn't mean someone is going to lose their life! we had four people in the car, and we all feel we barely escaped. *tr

on an unobstructed road no traffic in front the vehicle will apply brakes, activate seat belt restrains and signal that an object is in front when there is nothing. it is triggered by road repairs steel plates. dealer service was able to reproduce but claims this is normal as per mfg technical department. this is not our first vehicle with collision avoidance system the other vehicle does not gets these error messages under wet or icy/snow conditions this could be very dangerous. *tr

the brake will apply on its own and the brake lights will not come on because you don't press the pedal which would trigger the brake switch to turn the brake lights on. this is a very serious issue as it has happened to me numerous times at high speed. note i sent to acura during the uncommanded brake issue, it describes the issue etc.. this is , i had brought my 2005 mdx which i bought new from you back in 2005 in for the uncommanded brake application issue on feb 10th 2010. as you know when this issue happens the brake applies itself when my foot is on the gas pedal and sometimes the vsa and ! light come on and sometimes they do not. on the 10th i drove the car with you mechanic and we had a brief experience of the issue but because of traffic i had to apply the brake and when my foot was off of the brake it still applied itself and then released and then applied again without me touching the pedal. the most serious of the issues is when my foot is on the gas and the brake applies itself. on that day your mechanic did a bunch of tests from the service manual for dtc 66 & 68 including: -- "the jiggle" test to see if something was loose and would trigger a code -- battery test for voltage -- ground connection to body clean and reset -- vsa connector was taken off and put back on -- codes were reset there is more but the length is greater than allowable maximum of '1,901'. *tr

i am writing with respect to a defect in a 2010 acura mdx (vehicle id #: [xxx]) that i previously leased. on august 27, 2012, my wife was driving said vehicle on the merritt parkway in ct. the electrical system and engine of the vehicle completely shut down while the car was in motion and my wife lost control of the car and could not bring the car to a stop and eventually the car rolled to a stop. my wife was terrified by the incident and called 9-1-1. after waiting a while, the car was able to be restarted and we brought it to the dealer where we had leased the automobile. the dealer ran a series of tests but could not identify a reason for what happened, and drove the car for several minutes, but told us they could not replicate the problem. we were, of course, no longer comfortable driving the vehicle and immediately terminated the lease. i subsequently had a series of communications with acura client relations at 1919 torrance blvd. m/s 500-2n7e, torrance, ca 90501-2746 (800-382-2238) during which i ultimately learned that there were additional tests that acura could have performed to determine the cause of the problem. i inquired as to what those tests were, whether those tests were performed on the car and, if so, what the test results showed, and if the car was ultimately repaired. however, i did not receive any response from acura. accordingly, i am writing to advise the nhtsa of the above, and to seek the assistance of the nhtsa in obtaining answers to the questions that i have asked acura. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).*tr

i was very surprised to hear that my rear brakes needed replacement after only 24,800 miles. i had only taken my car in for the normal oil changing and tire rotation. my normal daily commute is to and from work totaling 50 miles, with the occasional short stop at a grocery store. when my husband questioned acura if there were any complaints or recalls about the premature wearing of 2010 tsx brakes, they stated they hadn't heard anything. (i had previously owned a honda accord and i had similar problems with the brakes on that car as well.) so my husband and i decided to look the information up online and there seems to have been a class action lawsuit filed indicating that certain honda and acura year models had complaints of premature wear on brakes. apparently in the settlement you can submit your information and receipt to the settlement administrator and receive up to $150 back for the replacement of the new brakes. when i called the settlement administrator to verify that my car was included in this reimbursement settlement, i was informed, to my disappointment, that my car did not qualify. it seems that several people have had similar problems with premature brake wear and yet they only marked certain cars for replacement? evidently this is an ongoing problem with these certain year models and acura should stand behind their product and replace the brakes without the customer having to go through the surprise and cost of replacing their brakes prematurely. apparently the only way a recall will be made or anyone will take this problem seriously is if someone is badly injured or even killed when their brakes do not respond or respond improperly. if acura/honda does not address this issue, with the safety of its customers in mind, my husband and i will have to seriously contemplate doing business with a different company altogether. *tr

i was driving down the highway at ~60+ mph in traffic and tapped the brakes. the car lurched and almost came to a dead stop (i later learned that the automatic transmission had shifted into 1st gear). this happened 2-3 other times as i tried to move over and get out of the traffic flow w/o being able to fully deploy the brakes. i had to "coast" to a stop. the force of the lurch was enough to throw me forward in my seat. i feel very fortunate that the airbag didn't deploy and that i was able to move to the shoulder without incident. the loud clunk that the car made when this happened made me think i had hit a huge rock or something in the road. beyond scary. i am the only owner of this car and it has been 100% maintained by the dealer. *tr

i was applying the brake due to stopped traffic ahead of my car. as i did so, the car accelerated rather than slowed down. my car contacted the left rear of the car in front of mine, and as i tried to straighten out the car, it again accelerated. veered to the right, and struck the stone wall of the bridge on the shoulder of the highway. according to the police report, there was a malfunction with the throttle mechanism. "officers witnessed, when starting the vehicle, the rpm indicator quickly rise to approximately 5,000/5,500 without any pressure applied on the gas pedal. the floor area did not exhibit items, including the floor mat, which would potentially be the cause." *tr

i was driving and prior to hitting my brakes, several alert messages popped up and a voice started reading them out. the messages are still saved on the acura's computer, but since the car is in the shop right now, i don't have access to recall them exactly. the only one i remember said that the vehicle stability assist and tcs may not operate and it tried to direct me to find the nearest acura dealership. there was also a message about abs. when i pressed the brakes, there was minimal resistance, and the car didn't stop whatsoever. it didn't skid or slide, there was no brake pressure at all. i had a few seconds to decide if i wanted to: pull into a ditch and probably flip the suv, pull into oncoming traffic, or hit the car in front of me that was stopped at a red light. i ended up choosing the latter and hitting the car, after my car didn't decelerate or brake whatsoever. the alert messages remained accessible on the computer of the car after the accident and i can retrieve them after the car is repaired. there was significant damage to the front of the suv, but i am obviously most concerned about the safety of the car being that the brakes were not functional during to the accident whatsoever. the brakes were functional after the accident and the car had been restarted, so the problem is concerning for sure, but intermittent. *tr

the brakes began to have an awful squeaking sound at 28,000 miles. i called acura's customer representative. the rep on the phone said that the warranty did not cover brake pads since it was considered normal wear and tear. the front brakes were in good shape, still has 75%, but rear brakes pad only has 30% left. the same case with my honda accord 2008, rear brake wears out more than the front one. *tr

acura tsx 2010 rear brakes are prematurely wearing. during last visit to the dealer (around 27,000 miles) i was told that my rear break pads have only 3mm of ceramic left. i was very surprised by this news, but did not get them replaced at that time. now i went ahead and replaced rear break pads myself and was very shocked to see that the pads that are in contact with calipers are almost gone while pads that are on the outer side of the wheel still have more than 50% of life left in them. i will save the break pads so let me know if you want to see them. *tr

i was driving approximately 55 mph on a busy street. without warning and without any direction from me, the cars right front brake engaged for a short period of time (seconds) and the steering wheel jerked to the right. the incident corrected itself quickly and the vsa light comes on and stays on. it is a very scary experience. in the beginning, it only occurred once every week or two. the frequency has steadily increased over the past year. at this time, it occurs about every other time you drive the vehicle. *tr
