transmission on my 2002 acuta tl-s has been replaced on two occassions. i have no reason to beleive that this problem has been corrected, the 3rd replacement transmission is now mis-shifing at highway speeds. dealer nor acura has provided any explanation as to why this model vehicle needs so many transmission replacements.

2003 acura 3.2 tl previously reported sudden downshift from 5th gear to 2nd gear at highway speeds. vehicle inspected by gettel acura in sarasota, fl. told "cannot reproduce problem so honda/acura will not authorize any repairs". vehicle is still at dealer, they are attempting to reproduce problem. have been told by acura customer care that my vehicle is "outside the vin number series covered by previous nhtsa investigations" and my vehicle is not a candidate for repair, despite the 7 year, 100k mile extended warranty. was told "we believe you, but if we cannot reproduce the problem, there is nothing we can do...why should we dump thousands of dollars in parts into your car if we can't find anything wrong?" i explained their liabiliy and the potential safety hazard, as, the vehicle had suddenly downshifted from 5th gear to 2nd, twice in last 5 days. acura/honda appears to be stonewalling, and i will have to seek legal counsel in order to compel them to comply with the terms of the extended transmission warranty...before the transmission failure causes an accident or injury to myself or my family. acura insists the transmission problems were "fixed" before the car was built, so there is no way i could be having the same problems, and i was chastized for quoting information from nhtsa investigation results...they told me "you aren't a mechanic, and trying to get a new transmission because you read something on the web doen't mean your car has a problem". this was courtesy of "robin" at acura customer care department on 2/24/04. . the dealership called today, stated it was raining, so they couldn't take my car out to run diagnostics..and they'll try again "tomorrow". if they find nothing wrong, they plan on returning the vehicle to me, unrepaired. . i am most certainly scared to get back behind the wheel of this vehicle, due to the two sudden downshifts that nearly caused loss of control of the vehicle. . acura is not complying with it's agreement with nhtsa.*ak

i have a 2000 acura tl. while driving on the delway memorial bridge doing about 70 mph i noticed smoke in my rear view mirror, then the car started reving and not going anywhere. i pulled over and noticed tranmission fluid at the side of the car behind the car and underneath the car. i took the car to a gas station only to find out that its a possibility that the torque converter in the transmission must have overheated and exploded because the guy could not find a leak nowhere. when he opened the bolt on the transmission it smelled like something burning and smoke came out. i can recall about 6 months ago i took it into the dealership to have them check out the car because of the drive five light, the hard jerk from park to reverse and the thump from reverse to drive, the engine light was also on. all they did was replace some sensor. now i brought it back to them and they told me that i have an internal transmission failure. when i bought the car it had 80k miles on it, this was last may. when i took it to acura it had 95k now it has 139k on it and it constantly jumps, jerks, rev's and stalls on a regular basis especially when it gets hot. *ak

i have a 2004 acura tl with 2000 miles on it. it has been at the dealer twice for 7 total days, trying to correct a vibration between 45 and 60. it is also evident at 75-80. vibration is felt in seat, steering wheel and pedals dealer replaced front tires twice and front rims once. we still experience the vibration frequently. i contacted honda of america. the representative informed me that this was a torque converter problem known for approximatel 4 months. i asked about returning the car and was told i was not going to get my money back. he stated that engineering is looking at modifying engine mounts. i told him that was only masking the problem. he stated all 04 and 05 models have the problem! i was floored they knew it and were still pushing cars out the door and the dealership was blaming the problem on tires. i asked about inherent vibration impact on the life expectancy to the driver train seals and bearings. the honda of america representative became very rude. i got his name and hung up. not what you would expect from honda or a $35k car! the dealership service centerwas appalled that honda america stated there was widespread problems with the torque converter, stated they never heard of it and insisted this is a tire issue! it is desheartening to get two different stories. i believe the tire story gives the honda corporate offices some relief of liability by leveraging off of firestone for defects. should the torque converter be openly pursued as the culprit and johnq. public knowing about it, this could be a drive a costly recall funded from the pockets of honda of america! *ak

check engine light came on code reading po470 which acura says its means transmission torque converter. this is the second failure and only 12k miles from a recheck up by acura on the transmission saying the metal flakes in the case are normal. i think there is a cover up to these bad transmissions. there are numerous posts from consumers with the same issues. acura capped the transmission warranty even though the replacement fails the same way and the same gear. *tr

torque converter issue (vibration/shudder/grinding between 20-50 mph while accelerating). acura recommends replacement of transmission and torque converter. acura has not acknowledged this as a problem, despite the repeated incidents of failure. this is a known problem and needs to addressed by acura!!!! it would be safe to say from similar complaints that i've read on the internet that there are probably thousands of mdxs that have this problem. *kb

the car had begun shuddering at between 30-40 miles an hour and then at a very low rpm in 1st gear, the car started jerking heavily. the dealership first said they would charge me 125$ to diagnose the problem, unless it was the torque converter as i had mentioned. now they want 2800$ to fix the problem. - at what point in time - as i've now seen this as a recurring problem with mdx's do they give a recall? this is a young car. *kb
